Chapter 25 - LILY BECOMES A MOTHER
Lily married at thirty-one.
Her husband, Daniel Price, worked in municipal planning.
No medical background.
No connection to the trust.
They signed a prenuptial agreement.
Clear finances.
Independent counsel.
No spouse-management fees.
No automatic medical authority beyond ordinary legal rights without explicit documents.
Lily joked:
“My romance comes with appendices.”
Daniel answered:
“Good appendices.”
Two years later, they had a son, Owen.
Pregnancy terrified Lily in unexpected ways.
Not because of birth.
Because medical appointments required other people to describe her body.
She changed obstetricians after one dismissed a question.
The second doctor said:
“You are allowed to ask for explanation without apologizing.”
That sentence mattered.
When Owen developed a rash at four months, Lily panicked.
She took photographs.
Then stopped.
“Am I doing what Greg did?”
Daniel answered:
“You’re documenting a rash for the pediatrician. You’re not building a fundraiser.”
She laughed through tears.
Therapy helped distinguish responsible caregiving from compulsive proof.
Owen had eczema.
Real.
Treatable.
No identity built around it.
At age three, he hated boots.
Lily bought sneakers.
No symbolism.
At age five, he chose purple rain boots because another child had them.
Lily stood in the store holding the box.
Daniel asked:
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“Need a minute?”
“Yes.”
Owen waited impatiently.
“Mom, they light up!”
That settled it.
