Chapter 22 - MICHAEL COMES HOME

Michael left custody years later under supervised release.
No surprise reunion at the door.
His reentry plan included housing away from me.
Employment restrictions prohibited fiduciary control over other people’s funds.
He found work in operations at a manufacturing company.
Lower salary.
No family title.
He accepted it.
The girls were older.
Olivia eleven.
Megan nine.
They had visited him in custody several times under therapist guidance.
Now they wanted normal outings.
Family court approved a gradual schedule.
Day visits first.
Then weekends after review.
I was afraid.
Not that he would kidnap them.
That old dynamics would return.
Dr. Levin said:
“Monitor behavior, not ghosts.”
So I did.
Michael cooked.
Badly.
Helped homework.
Showed up.
Did not ask Olivia to carry messages.
Did not complain about child support.
Did not discuss David’s case.
Once Megan asked:
“Are you poor?”
Michael laughed.
“Compared with Grandpa’s old life? Yes.”
I told him later not to make money jokes around them.
He apologized.
Adjusted.
Progress.
He asked me once:
“Could we ever—”
“No.”
He stopped.
Good.
Our marriage was over.
Co-parenting was not audition for reunion.
Michael eventually dated someone.
Anna.
A high-school counselor.
He told me before introducing the girls.
Appropriate.
I felt jealous for eight minutes.
Then laughed at myself.
Human.
I later met Anna.
She knew the case.
Asked no invasive questions.
She told Olivia:
“I am not replacing your mom.”
Excellent start.
They married years later.
I attended no wedding.
May you like
The girls did.
No drama.
