Chapter 6 - THE MISTAKE I MADE AT MIDNIGHT

I should have let Maya handle the bank.
Instead, I called Vanessa.
“What was the boardroom meeting?”
She laughed.
“You finally discovered you married above your clearance level.”
“You forged my signature.”
“Prove it.”
“Why did you starve Chloe?”
“She missed one course.”
“She was outside in winter.”
“Because you trained her to disobey.”
My anger overwhelmed judgment.
I drove to the Bennett Grand Hotel after midnight and demanded the original transfer document.
Maya had told me not to confront anyone.
I entered anyway.
Vanessa waited inside Arthur’s old boardroom with two security officers and a phone already recording.
“You threatened us at dinner,” she said. “Now you’ve broken into company offices.”
“The door was open.”
“Because you used David’s spouse credential.”
I had forgotten the family access card remained in my wallet.
The system recorded my entry.
Vanessa stood beside a shredder.
Paper fragments filled the bin.
I moved toward it.
Security blocked me.
“Preserving evidence,” I said.
“Stealing company records,” she answered.
Police arrived.
I was not arrested, but I received a trespass notice and a warning to stop contacting Vanessa.
The video reached family court the next morning.
Carol’s lawyer argued that I was escalating.
The judge did not remove Chloe, but she ordered all company-record retrieval through counsel.
I had made myself part of their story again.
Maya waited until we reached her office before speaking.
“You knew they wanted footage of you acting without restraint.”
“I thought she was destroying proof.”
“She may have been. You still handed her proof of something else.”
“I am tired of waiting while they erase everything.”
“Then learn the difference between urgency and permission.”
The shredded paper was recovered under a warrant.
Most pieces belonged to routine hotel invoices.
One fragment carried Arthur’s signature.
Another contained the words:
FIRST LIVING GRANDCHILD.
A third read:
FIFTY-ONE PERCENT VOTING CONTROL.
They were not enough to establish the full document.
They were enough to explain why Carol wanted Chloe and my signature under her authority.
Then building security found a second dining-room recording.
David had stood outside the balcony for forty-three seconds before I arrived.
May you like
He saw Chloe through the glass.
And walked back to the table.
