Chapter 2 - THE CALL MADE BEFORE I CAME

I took Chloe directly to the hospital.

Her temperature was low but not dangerous. Her fingers and toes warmed gradually beneath heated blankets. The stale bread remained inside an evidence bag after the pediatric nurse asked whether I wanted the incident documented.

I said yes.

David arrived with an attorney before the doctor discharged us.

“You took our daughter without telling me where you were going.”

“She was freezing.”

“My mother said you overturned the table and threatened everyone.”

“I said it was their final dinner.”

“That sounds like a threat.”

“It was a warning.”

“About what?”

I did not answer.

A child-protection investigator named Leah Morgan entered with a police officer.

Carol had reported that I left Chloe unattended on the balcony during an argument and then attacked the family when confronted.

The report had been submitted at 8:31 p.m.

I had not reached the penthouse until 8:44.

Carol accused me before I found Chloe.

David lowered his eyes when the investigator read the timestamp.

“You knew she planned this,” I said.

“No.”

“You told me dinner began at eight thirty. You knew I would arrive late from work.”

“I didn’t know Chloe was outside.”

“That is not the same answer.”

The hospital photographed Chloe’s red hands and damp tights. She told Leah that Grandma closed the door because she “would not say the sentence.”

“What sentence?” Leah asked.

Chloe looked at David.

Then she stopped speaking.

David’s attorney requested that questioning end.

Leah agreed. Chloe needed a trained child interviewer, not adults repeating questions until she produced the answer they wanted.

The police reviewed the penthouse hallway footage.

It showed Carol carrying Chloe toward the balcony seventeen minutes before I arrived.

The balcony camera had been disabled.

Vanessa claimed it malfunctioned.

Building records showed someone manually turned it off from David’s phone.

He stared at the report.

“I didn’t do that.”

“Who knows your password?” the officer asked.

David looked toward his attorney.

That hesitation hurt more than a denial.

Before we left, Leah handed me an emergency family-court notice.

David, Carol, and Vanessa were seeking temporary custody of Chloe.

Their petition claimed I was unstable, financially desperate, and planning to flee with the child.

The document had been signed by David that afternoon.

Hours before he watched his mother leave our daughter outside.
