PART 5

Jamie adjusted surprisingly fast.
Children have an incredible ability to heal...
When they're finally safe.
The first thing he asked for wasn't toys.
Or video games.
Or expensive clothes.
It was a bicycle.
"I've never had one."
I stared at him.
"You've never ridden a bike?"
He shook his head.
"Grandma said they were too expensive."
The next morning we drove to a local bike shop.
Jamie spent nearly an hour choosing between a blue one and a red one.
Finally he picked the blue.
As we loaded it into my truck, he whispered,
"Can I really keep it?"
I smiled.
"You don't have to ask permission to enjoy being a kid anymore."
That afternoon...
I taught my son to ride a bicycle.
He crashed six times.
Laughed seven.
By sunset he was riding across the driveway shouting,
"Dad! Look!"
I watched him disappear down the path...
Then looked toward Sarah.
She was crying quietly.
"What's wrong?"
"I've never seen him laugh like that."
Neither had I.
Three months later the criminal trial began.
Victor accepted a plea agreement.
He received twenty-two years in federal prison.
My mother refused every offer.
She insisted she was innocent.
She blamed Victor.
Then Sarah.
Then me.
Finally...
The jury returned.
Guilty.
On every count.
As deputies led her away, she turned toward me.
"You owe me!"
The courtroom froze.
"I raised you!"
I calmly stood.
"No."
"You raised me to trust you."
"You chose to steal that trust."
May you like
She screamed as officers escorted her through the courtroom doors.
That was the last time I ever saw my mother.
