PART 4

One afternoon Agent Collins called.
"We found something you should see."
He handed me a worn leather folder recovered from Victor's office.
Inside were contracts.
Property deeds.
Bank statements.
And one yellow legal pad.
Across the top someone had written:
Michael must never come home early.
I stopped breathing.
Below it...
My mother's handwriting.
There were dates.
Calculations.
Notes beside every payment I sent.
Tell him repairs cost more.
Say Sarah needed surgery.
Claim Jamie started private preschool.
Each lie had earned another wire transfer.
Then I reached the final page.
One sentence.
Written in darker ink.
If he comes home unexpectedly, Sarah and the boy stay out back until we figure something out.
I couldn't finish reading.
I closed the folder.
Because suddenly...
That cold balcony wasn't a moment of cruelty.
It had been a plan.
Sarah found me sitting alone on the back porch that evening.
She quietly placed two cups of coffee on the table.
"You read the notebook."
I nodded.
She sat beside me.
"I blamed myself."
"For what?"
"I thought maybe if I'd been a better wife..."
I turned toward her.
"Stop."
She looked down.
"I kept wondering why your mother hated me so much."
I took her hand.
"She didn't hate you."
"What?"
"She hated anyone who reminded her the money wasn't hers."
Sarah looked toward the sunset.
"I almost forgot what hope felt like."
I squeezed her hand.
"You don't have to remember it anymore."
May you like
"Why?"
"Because now we get to build it."
