Chapter 23 - WHAT MOM WANTED FROM HER CHILDREN

Six months into Ryan’s sentence, Mom asked to see him.
Approved video visit.
Her choice.
Elise confirmed no pressure.
I stayed out.
Afterward Mom called.
“I saw him.”
“How was it?”
“Terrible.”
“Want to talk?”
“He’s thinner.”
Mothers.
Then:
“He apologized again.”
“Okay.”
“I told him I don’t trust him with money.”
“Good.”
“He laughed.”
“What?”
“Not because funny. He said, ‘You shouldn’t.’”
That was progress.
Then:
“I told him I still love him.”
I sat quietly.
Mom:
“Are you angry?”
“No.”
I thought maybe I would be.
I wasn’t.
Then:
“I told him I am not moving back with either of you.”
I laughed.
“Good.”
Her apartment.
Her life.
Then she said:
“I want Vivian to know I’m willing to read one letter.”
I hesitated.
“Your choice.”
“Stop saying it like lawyer.”
“Sorry.”
Vivian sent.
Mom read.
Did not show me.
Weeks later they had one supervised mediation session.
Not reconciliation.
Vivian apologized without explaining sibling rivalry.
Mom told her:
“You made me afraid to drop dishes.”
Vivian cried.
No hug.
Then Mom ended after forty minutes.
That was enough.
Later she said:
“I may see her again.”
“Okay.”
“I may not.”
“Okay.”
She looked annoyed.
“You have no opinion?”
“I have many.”
“Say one.”
“I want you safe.”
She smiled.
“That one I’ll accept.”
Then Ryan’s relationship with me.
I waited a year before responding.
My letter:
I believe your apology.
I do not trust you yet.
Those are different.
I will not manage your rehabilitation for you.
Mom’s relationship with you belongs to her.
My children will not have contact until Nathan and I agree it is safe.
Claire.
No love.
Not because I didn’t.
Because I did not want the word to become leverage.
Ryan replied:
Understood.
Good.
Then Nathan and I revisited travel agreement.
I had barely traveled in a year.
My business suffered some.
Was I avoiding because guilt?
Yes.
My therapist asked:
“Do you intend to never leave your children overnight again?”
“No.”
“Then practice safely.”
So I did.
Two-night Boston project? We're already maybe location unspecified. Fine.
Kimberly stayed.
Nathan flew in? Not necessary.
I checked once morning, once night.
Not hourly.
No relatives substituted.
No secret.
I came home.
Children clean.
Happy.
Mom had visited for lunch, not overnight.
Nothing terrible.
That trip mattered.
I did not let Ryan’s betrayal end my career.
Then Emma asked why I travel.
“Work.”
“Do you come back?”
“Yes.”
That simple.
Then Oliver dropped bowl.
I watched him freeze less than before.
He said:
“Oops.”
We cleaned.
The family was relearning accidents.
No punishment.
May you like
No invoice.
No debt.
