Defense subpoenas arrived.
My travel calendar.
Income.
Household budget.
Childcare contracts.
Emails.
The theory:
Claire was a high-income professional who delegated home life, gave Ryan broad authority, then criminalized him when one bad weekend embarrassed her.
It was not ridiculous as a story.
They would say:
Claire wanted everything handled without details.
She budgeted money.
Ryan provided cheaper family solution.
Claire knew Mom helped with twins.
Claire knew Vivian came.
Claire herself lost control and assaulted Vivian.
Then, after seeing bruises and dirty children, she recast every prior payment as theft.
That would resonate with anyone who disliked rich-ish working mothers.
I had to survive it.
My income was comfortable.
Not billionaire.
My consulting firm earned around $220,000 before taxes a strong year.
I paid mortgage.
Childcare.
Mom’s temporary care.
I could afford support.
That did not make deceptive billing irrelevant.
Then they asked:
“Did you ever tell Ryan he could keep savings if he found cheaper alternatives?”
No.
Any text?
None.
Instead:
ME:
If Harbor misses again, let me know. I’ll switch agencies.
Ryan never let me know.
Good.
Then:
ME:
Kimberly stays on her schedule while I travel. I do not want Mom doing full toddler days.
Clear.
Ryan responded:
Understood.
That killed family-substitution claim.
Then Mom moving.
ME to Margaret:
If you love Evergreen Commons, put deposit down. I’ll figure childcare. You do not owe me babysitting.
Sent two months before.
Ryan’s story to Mom—that Claire needed her to stay—directly contradicted.

Then Ryan to Mom:
Claire says whatever makes her feel generous. When she has deadline she calls you.
Could Mom have believed?
Yes.
Manipulation.
Then one email I sent Ryan:
Please stop making Mom feel guilty about Evergreen. If she wants to move, help her.
He never showed Mom.
He replied:
Of course.
That was powerful.
Then disability/cognition.
Ryan claimed Mom sometimes confused.
Medical records showed no dementia.
Cardiac recovery.
UTI at hospital could cause fatigue, but not months.
No guardianship.
Again.
Then defense tried:
Maybe Mom willingly paid Ryan because Claire refused to let her contribute household money.
Interesting.
Mom did want to contribute.
Ryan might have framed his compensation as way.
But fake invoices to Claire still.
Then Vivian’s testimony.
She would be impeached.
Documents remain.
Then Denise, actual aide.
She testified:
Never worked those later dates.
Never wrote notes.
Never authorized use name.
Agency never changed billing.
Straight.
Then Kimberly.
Never fired by Claire.
Ryan impersonated household account.
Straight.
Then bank.
Mom authorized some transfers.
Some initiated under Ryan's POA.
Personal benefit.
Fiduciary duty.
A bank employee testified POA did not itself allow self-gifting and bank relied on account holder/agent representations.
Could bank have stopped?
Maybe.
No.
Then Ryan’s accountant.
He had reported income.
Defense:
No concealment.
Prosecution:
Tax reporting does not make false invoice honest.
Good.
Then Claire pot diversion.
Defense could ask to show bias/violent overreaction.
Judge allowed limited:
Claire admitted throwing pot and completed diversion.
No long details.
Fair.
I would say:
“Yes.”
No excuse.
Then children’s condition.
Pediatrician.
No starvation.
No major physical injury.
Neglect indicators.
Defense:
Four days of disrupted routine can cause rash/dehydration.
Yes.
Is every rash criminal neglect?
No.
Good.
Then texts about canceled preschool/nanny.
Jury would decide.
Trial became balanced enough to frighten me.
Good cases should still face proof.
Then Ryan offered plea:
Misdemeanor fraud? Prosecutor refused due amount/planning.
He would plead to one felony false-pretense count if child-neglect and assault dropped, with probation/no jail.
Prosecutor wanted some custody or community confinement due elder/child impact.
