Chapter 15 - THE FAKE CABIN

The cabin rental was more deliberate than I first understood.

Delaney booked it six weeks earlier.

Why that early?

The parenting evaluation had originally been scheduled for the same week as her planned private detox with Adrian.

She expected to leave the children with Vivian at a real cabin, disappear for medical treatment elsewhere, then return before I knew.

The plan changed when her condition worsened and Vivian refused the cabin entirely.

Delaney kept the reservation as a cover.

She created the scheduled photo messages Sunday night.

Some photos were old.

One was manipulated slightly to add a lake-window background.

Not sophisticated.

A template app.

The digital trail was obvious once examined.

She never expected forensic review.

She expected me to glance between meetings.

That realization hurt.

She understood my attention patterns.

A fish photo.

A heart emoji.

“Kids asleep.”

Enough to keep the busy father calm.

I had given her data about how little proof I needed.

During one therapy session, I asked Delaney:

“Why did you think those messages would work?”

She answered:

“Because they always did.”

No accusation in her voice.

Still true.

I had accepted parenting updates as information rather than relationship.

That did not make her deception my fault.

It told me something about our old arrangement.

She handled emotional details.

I handled logistics and money.

After divorce, we pretended equal custody automatically meant equal knowledge.

It did not.

The fake cabin worked because it fit an existing pattern.

I made a rule afterward.

During long separations, I spoke directly to the children unless medically inappropriate.

Not constant surveillance.

Direct contact.

Delaney agreed for future custody.

The court later incorporated it.

The fake cabin photos became criminal evidence.

They demonstrated planning to conceal location.

Delaney’s attorney argued concealment related to treatment privacy, not child abandonment.

Both could be true.

The same action served both.

At her plea hearing months later, Delaney admitted she created false travel information knowing I would rely on it to believe the children were under her supervision.

That admission mattered more than arguments about intention.

She could not say:

I only hid treatment.

She hid who had the children.

The lake cabin became an online obsession after court filings.

Reporters tried to photograph it.

The owner begged people to stop trespassing.

I issued one statement:

The property owner had nothing to do with this case.

No family drama should create innocent collateral damage where it can be prevented.

Micah never saw the cabin.

May you like

Good.

He had enough real rooms to remember.
