Chapter 12
At sentencing, Donna spoke first.
She apologized for “allowing Christmas tensions to become financial misunderstandings.”
The judge asked:
“Did you impersonate Eleanor Hayes during a remote notarization?”
“Yes.”
“Was that a misunderstanding?”
“No.”
“Did you sit in her chair because you believed the house should already belong to your son?”
Donna looked toward Brandon.
“Yes.”
“Did you expect her humiliation to produce useful video?”
“Yes.”
“Then describe the misunderstanding.”
Donna had no answer.
Brandon’s statement focused on desperation.
“My company was failing. My clients were suing. I believed the equity would let me repay everyone.”
The judge asked:
“Why not ask Eleanor honestly?”
“She would say no.”
“Then you understood the property was hers to refuse.”
Brandon began crying.
“I was trying to protect my children.”
The judge looked at the financial records.
“You placed substantial debt in their mother’s name, used their grandmother’s home without permission, and prepared recordings against both women.”
“I thought once the business recovered—”
“Your plan depended on future success created with property you did not own.”
I gave a victim statement.
“At Christmas, Brandon told me I could not sit at the head of my own table.
“That was not the crime.
“It was the explanation.
“He believed my place in the family depended on whether I continued providing the house, money, labor, and silence he needed.
“When I refused the chair, he was prepared to call me confused.
“When Claire questioned him, he called her unstable.
“When Lily recorded the truth, he called her manipulated.
“Every woman who contradicted him became a problem requiring management.
“I do not ask the court to punish him for embarrassing me.
“I ask the court to consider the years of planning, forged documents, stolen identities, threatened custody, and the use of family intimacy as access to financial systems.”
Brandon received a substantial prison sentence followed by supervision, restitution, and restrictions on financial and contracting work.
Donna received a shorter custodial sentence under her plea, followed by restitution and prohibition from fiduciary roles.
Patricia received home confinement, probation, restitution, and permanent loss of her commission due to cooperation and her narrower role.
