The protective-order hearing lasted two days.
Brandon’s attorney argued that Claire had invented abuse after her mother threatened to disinherit her.
He presented messages where Claire apologized to Brandon.
Promised to behave differently.
Said she was sorry for provoking him.
The words looked terrible outside their context.
The attorney asked:
“Would an abused woman repeatedly tell her husband he is a good father?”
Claire answered:
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he demanded reassurance after frightening us.”
“Did he instruct you to use those words?”
“Sometimes.”
“Do you have proof?”
“Some messages.”
He displayed another.
I ruin everything. You deserve someone better.
“Did you write this?”
“Yes.”
“Was Brandon holding your hand?”
“No.”
“Then these were your words.”
Claire looked toward him.
“They were the words that ended the argument fastest.”
The attorney questioned her about Christmas.
“You knew Donna would sit at the head of the table?”
“Yes.”
“You helped prepare the place setting?”
“Yes.”
“You did not warn Eleanor?”
“No.”
“Then you participated.”
“Yes.”
Brandon looked startled.
Claire continued:
“I participated because I was afraid. That does not make my mother responsible for what Brandon planned. It makes me responsible for not warning her.”
Owning her failure deprived his attorney of the weapon.
The court extended protection for Claire and the children.
Brandon received supervised contact only after evaluation, treatment, and child-safety review.
The court granted me exclusive possession of the residence while separate occupancy proceedings continued.
Donna was prohibited from entering.
Brandon’s attorney argued he would become homeless.
The judge reviewed the record.
“He has lived rent-free for twenty-six months while obtaining funds through invoices submitted against the owner’s trust.”
“He contributed labor.”
“Which labor?”
The attorney referenced renovations.
