Chapter 9

The criminal proceedings moved more slowly than public gossip.

Ryan faced charges involving assault, unlawful restraint, financial fraud, forgery, attempted coercion, drugging-related conduct, and conspiracy.

Marlene faced charges based on her distinct role.

No one was convicted because my father had been a prosecutor.

Daniel removed himself from every formal meeting where his history could create pressure.

He gave a witness statement.

Then allowed my attorneys and current prosecutors to work.

The court issued protective orders.

Ryan and Marlene could not contact me directly or through others.

They could not enter the house.

Their access to disputed funds was frozen where legally justified.

The house belonged jointly to Ryan and me, but a temporary order granted me exclusive use because of safety evidence.

I did not return immediately.

The cameras were still there.

Even after police removed them, I felt watched inside every room.

I stayed with my father.

At thirty-four, I slept in my childhood bedroom beneath faded glow-in-the-dark stars.

The room had not belonged to a frightened version of me before.

That helped.

Therapy began with Dr. Lena Ortiz.

She asked what I wanted.

“I want to stop feeling stupid.”

“That is not a feeling.”

“It feels like one.”

“It is a judgment.”

“I stayed.”

“Yes.”

“I defended him.”

“Yes.”

“I lied to my father.”

“Yes.”

Her refusal to contradict facts made me trust her.

“Why doesn’t that make me stupid?”

“Because coercive control works by making each survival decision reasonable in the moment and devastating in accumulation.”

We mapped the moments.

The apology after the first slap.

The financial crisis after the first account restriction.

The medication after the first memory gap.

The camera after the first accusation.

Marlene’s concern after every injury.

Ryan never began with the birthday.

He built a world where the birthday seemed possible.
