Chapter 4

The red pouch was opened under warrant at the police evidence unit.

Inside were:

Two passports.

Twenty-eight thousand dollars in cash.

A bottle of clonazepam prescribed to a deceased woman.

Three prepaid phones.

The forged postnuptial agreement.

A life-insurance policy covering me for four million dollars.

A limited power of attorney.

A capacity petition prepared for filing.

A flash drive.

And a handwritten schedule.

My birthday appeared in red ink.

6:00 — guests arrive

6:40 — cake / pressure

7:00 — signature

7:20 — incident if refusal

8:00 — transport

“Transport where?” I asked Detective Martinez.

“We are investigating.”

The capacity petition described me as emotionally unstable, addicted to sedatives, prone to violence, and incapable of managing inherited assets.

Attached were photographs.

Me asleep on the sofa.

Me crying in the kitchen.

Me holding a broken wineglass.

Me standing over Ryan while he sat on the floor.

Each image looked damning without context.

The sofa photograph was taken after Ryan gave me tea that left me unconscious for fourteen hours.

The kitchen photograph followed news that my mother’s former business partner had died.

The wineglass broke when Ryan knocked it from my hand.

The image of Ryan on the floor came after he blocked the bedroom door and I pushed past him.

The cameras had not been installed to protect the house.

They were installed to create fragments.

The flash drive contained edited compilations labeled:

AVA EPISODE 1

AVA THREAT

AVA INTOXICATED

AVA ATTACKS RYAN

The original footage remained on a server investigators recovered from Marlene’s condominium.

Unedited recordings showed what happened before each clip.

Ryan insulting me for forty minutes before I shouted.

Marlene placing pills in my tea.

Ryan striking his own shoulder against a doorframe, then turning on the camera and asking why I hit him.

The birthday schedule’s “incident if refusal” was explained in a message between Ryan and Marlene.

Ryan:

If she won’t sign, I’ll provoke her in front of everyone.

Marlene:

Make sure Owen films from the island.

Ryan:

Dad may come.

Marlene:

Better. Her aggression toward him proves danger.

They expected my father to defend me.

They hoped I would attack Ryan when he mocked the bruises.

Eleven witnesses were not guests.

They were an audience selected to remember the version Ryan created.

Owen Pierce had received instructions.

Keep camera on Ava once Daniel arrives.

When detectives questioned him, he admitted Ryan said the party might involve “a family intervention.”

He claimed he did not know about the assault.

His phone contained an earlier video from that afternoon.

Ryan stood beside the cake.

“You ready?” Owen asked.

Ryan smiled.

“She either signs, or tonight everybody sees what she really is.”

Marlene’s voice came from outside the frame.

“Remember—do not touch her once the guests arrive.”

The bruises already existed.

They needed my reaction, not another blow.
