Chapter 4

Vale Development tried to treat the balcony attack as a private marital crisis.
The company issued a statement before I left the hospital.
We are deeply concerned about an incident involving two members of the Vale family. Adrian Vale has temporarily stepped aside while facts are established. The company has no reason to believe the personal matter relates to ongoing operations.
The recording showed Adrian discussing my father’s work seconds before trying to kill me.
The relation to operations was visible.
Celeste Vale still appeared on television wearing cream wool and pearls.
She said:
“My son loves his wife. Sofia has experienced significant grief and professional stress. We pray for both of them.”
Both.
The man who pushed.
The woman who fell.
Balanced language protects whoever benefits from confusion.
My hospital room filled with flowers.
Most had no names.
One arrangement carried a card from Celeste.
Family matters should be handled with dignity.
Lydia photographed it.
Then discarded the flowers after security inspected them.
The company’s independent directors met under emergency conditions.
Adrian had served as chief executive.
Julian controlled procurement.
Celeste chaired the board.
Three family members dominated every path between money and accountability.
One director, Miriam Cole, contacted me privately through counsel.
“I received your safety report three weeks ago,” she said.
“What happened?”
“It vanished from the board portal.”
“Who can remove submissions?”
“Corporate secretary, chief executive, board chair.”
“Adrian, Celeste, and their lawyer.”
“Yes.”
Miriam had downloaded the cover page but not the attachments.
The cover identified JVR Materials and six compromised buildings.
“Why didn’t you ask me directly?”
“I was told you withdrew the report after discovering errors.”
“I did not.”
Miriam closed her eyes.
“I accepted the explanation.”
That sentence killed almost as effectively as forged steel.
The board formed a special committee excluding all Vale family members.
They hired forensic accountants, structural engineers, and outside counsel.
City regulators opened urgent inspections of buildings containing JVR components.
Residents were not evacuated from every property automatically.
Engineers assessed actual risk.
Some anchors were noncritical.
Others required immediate reinforcement.
At East River Tower, inspectors discovered that seventeen balcony assemblies contained counterfeit parts.
My father had worked beside a system designed to fail quietly.
The anchor involved in his death had disappeared.
Then a maintenance worker contacted Detective Martinez.
He had found a metal component inside Julian’s private storage room two years earlier.
Julian said it was evidence from a resolved insurance case and ordered him to leave it.
The worker secretly photographed the serial number.
It matched the missing anchor.
Police obtained a warrant.
The storage room had been emptied after Adrian’s arrest.
Security footage showed Celeste entering at 3:14 a.m.
She left carrying a black equipment case.
When questioned, she said it contained family documents.

The company driver said the case weighed more than seventy pounds.
Steel does not become a family document because a mother carries it.
