Chapter 14

Adrian wrote from prison.
At first, Lydia screened the letters.
Most contained strategy disguised as remorse.
You know Julian influenced me.
Mother made us believe the company was survival.
You released your hand.
We both made choices.
The sentence tried to divide the attempted murder equally between the man peeling fingers and the woman falling.
I read none.
Years later, one letter changed.
There was no request for contact.
No defense.
He wrote:
I met you because of the trust. I loved you later. I used that love to convince myself the beginning no longer mattered. When you found the anchor records, I felt the world I inherited choosing between us. I chose it.
Accurate.
Not absolution.
I kept the summary, not the original.
Julian wrote once to Naomi Bennett and once to Mateo’s institute.
He disclosed additional offshore accounts.
Recovered money supported restitution.
Celeste never apologized.
She filed appeals.

Major convictions remained.

We preserved his toolbox, notebook, and coffee mug.
The rest did not become sacred because he died.
At the institute’s opening, I spoke beneath no chandelier.
The event took place inside a converted testing warehouse.
Behind me stood a full-scale balcony rig.
“This institute exists because workers saw failures before executives admitted them,” I said.
“Safety does not begin with people at the top deciding to care.
“It begins with systems that allow the person holding the wrench to stop the person holding the title.”
Afterward, a young apprentice approached.
“My supervisor says reporting problems makes us disloyal.”
“What do you think?”
“I think buildings don’t care who signs the paycheck.”
I smiled.
“My father would agree.”
We tested the new anchor until it failed.
Every component eventually fails under enough load.
