Chapter 8 - THE NOTE WITH MY HANDWRITING

The note was written on stationery from my home office.
My fingerprint appeared near the lower edge.
The handwriting resembled mine because it came from mine.
A forensic examiner determined the words had been traced from samples in a birthday-planning notebook.
Someone placed translucent paper over separate phrases, copied the letter forms, and combined them into one sentence.
My fingerprint likely came from handling the stationery before it was removed.
The note had been planted in Edward’s desk after the birthday.
His home camera showed Marjorie entering the office under police supervision to retrieve medication information.
She remained alone for eighty-nine seconds.
Her attorney insisted she planted nothing.
Detectives reviewed the footage frame by frame.
Marjorie opened one drawer, removed a folder, and placed it on the desk.
The note was already beneath it.
Someone had hidden it earlier.
Edward denied knowledge.
Sabrina had access to the house every week.
The evidence became another attempted frame, but its existence revealed something important.
Sabrina had prepared conflicting stories.
If the planted medicine in my bag convinced police, I would appear to be the poisoner.
If camera evidence implicated Sabrina, the note would suggest I framed her.
She built a case where every road led back to my guilt.
Grace called it a layered fraud defense.
“You create multiple explanations,” she said. “Not because each must win, but because confusion delays action.”
The receiver found the same strategy inside Cole Meridian.
The Harper Future Fund made me look like the embezzler.
The false medical report made my objections look irrational.
The merger documents made Sabrina look authorized.
The insurance policy turned my incapacity into company revenue.
None needed to survive a full trial.
They only needed to control the first seventy-two hours.
The emergency guardianship petition had been scheduled for filing Monday morning.
A clerk found the unfiled electronic submission inside Voss’s legal portal.
Attached exhibits included:
The planted sleep medication.
The false medical report.
The forged voting trust.
Draft witness statements.
A photograph of Harper drinking from the unicorn cup.
The photograph had been taken by Marjorie approximately ten minutes before the collapse.
It showed Sabrina’s hand resting on Harper’s shoulder.
“Why photograph that?” Nolan asked.
“To prove Harper drank something served under Camille’s supervision,” Ortiz said.
The guardianship petition requested that Sabrina receive temporary custody.
It also requested authority over Harper’s future inheritance and any company shares held for her benefit.
The motive was no longer only the merger.
If I lost custody and control, Sabrina could manage the financial structure designed around Harper.
Nolan read the petition twice.
“She was going to take our daughter after poisoning her.”
“Yes,” I said.
Harper remained unaware of the legal details.
She knew Aunt Sabrina had put medicine in her drink.
She knew Grandma had helped with a bad plan.
She knew Grandpa had given Sabrina pills.
Dr. Brooks advised against explaining shares, insurance, and custody petitions.
“A child needs enough truth to understand safety,” she said. “Not the entire architecture of adult greed.”
At home, Harper began drawing birthday tables.
In every picture, the cups were empty.
One evening, she drew Sabrina standing near a car.
I asked who was inside.
“Me.”
“Where are you going?”
“Aunt Sabrina’s house.”
“Did she tell you that?”
Harper nodded.
“Before I drank, she said Mommy would sleep for a long time and I could live with her.”
The phrase “for a long time” had not appeared in the first interview.
Dr. Brooks arranged a careful follow-up rather than questioning Harper ourselves.
During that interview, Harper remembered another detail.
Sabrina had shown her a bedroom on her phone.
Pink walls.
A unicorn lamp.
New clothes.
She called it Harper’s future room.
Police searched Sabrina’s vacation property.

Upstairs, they found the room exactly as Harper described.
Inside the closet were school uniforms in Harper’s size, a duplicate birth certificate, and a completed application transferring her to a private school near Sabrina’s home.
