Chapter 17 - THE FIRST DAY OF TRIAL

The prosecution did not begin with black water.

It began with access.

Gwendolyn became household administrative deputy.

She controlled schedules.

Caregiver communication.

Family-office records.

Then isolation.

Marisol fired.

Camera disabled.

Phone access reduced.

Then financial pressure.

Documents.

Hartbridge.

Continuity certificate.

Then bruises.

Then water.

Sequence mattered.

Defense began differently.

Florence:

Controlling.

Classist.

Hostile to Gwendolyn.

Manipulative.

Secretive.

All true in parts.

They showed Florence’s hairbrush incident.

Messages:

Florence to Henry:

Gwendolyn will ruin Lucas if he keeps trusting her.

Florence to Marisol:

I need proof before I tell Lucas.

Defense argued Florence staged surveillance to destroy a daughter-in-law she hated.

Then video.

Gwendolyn gripping Florence’s arm.

Hard.

Not staged.

Medication across room.

Not staged.

Threat:

“Sign and we can stop doing this the hard way.”

Not staged.

The black-water clip lacked first seconds because camera angle partly blocked.

Then I opened door.

Full.

My slap.

Pitcher breaking.

Gwendolyn:

“You have no idea what she’s been hiding from you!”

Camera point.

Defense used my strike.

“Lucas Weaver is physically intimidating.”

True.

“His wife had reason to fear him.”

Maybe after that moment.

Had I hit her before?

No.

Threatened?

No.

Controlled money?

No evidence.

Then my testimony.

“Did you slap your wife?”

“Yes.”

“Did she hit you first?”

“No.”

“Did Florence ask you to strike her?”

“No.”

“Were you angry?”

“Yes.”

“Did you want to punish Gwendolyn?”

“In the moment, I wanted her away from Florence.”

“Yet you used force.”

“Yes.”

No clean hero.

Then defense asked:

“Did Florence lie to you for years?”

“Yes.”

“Did that make Gwendolyn’s statement true?”

“Partly.”

“Did you learn Florence had hidden your father’s letter?”

“Yes.”

“Did you become angry with Florence?”

“Yes.”

“Then Gwendolyn was right.”

I looked at the jury.

“About Florence hiding information.”

Pause.

“Not about the bruises.”

Defense counsel moved on.

Truth survives when not oversold.

Then Florence testified the next day.

She admitted every ugly thing defense asked.

Yes, she insulted Hartbridge.

Yes, she distrusted Gwendolyn.

Yes, she hid information from me.

Yes, she threw a hairbrush.

Then prosecutor:

“Did any of that give Gwendolyn permission to force dirty water into your mouth?”

Florence answered:

May you like

“No.”

That was the entire case stripped to one line.
