Chapter 12 - GWENDOLYN’S VERSION

Gwendolyn gave a proffer through her lawyers.

Not a confession yet.

A possible cooperation discussion.

She admitted:

She knew the camera worked by the last month.

She tried to disable cloud archiving.

She took the Weaver schedule from Florence’s drawer.

She used the copied signature in a “draft.”

She denied intending the draft to reach lenders.

Emails contradicted partly.

She admitted grabbing Florence.

Denied causing every bruise.

Possible.

Florence had fallen genuinely too.

She admitted withholding medication for several hours once.

Not days.

Medical records supported no severe consequence.

She admitted the black-water assault.

Her lawyer called it:

“A grotesque act during an emotional breakdown.”

Accurate enough.

Then motive.

Her father’s company collapse had left her family humiliated.

Adrian inherited debt.

Gwendolyn believed marriage into Weaver wealth gave her one chance to rebuild the Hart name.

Florence treated Hartbridge like charity.

That enraged her.

She said:

“Florence looked at us like beggars.”

Maybe true.

Florence had class prejudice too.

I had heard it.

“Your family doesn’t understand capital.”

“Adrian is improvising.”

“Gwendolyn married up.”

Cruel.

Did cruelty cause abuse?

No.

Did it feed resentment?

Yes.

Gwendolyn told prosecutors:

“I wanted one deal that proved my family could stand beside the Weavers.”

Then:

“When Florence blocked it, I thought she was doing it to humiliate me.”

“What about Lucas?”

“I thought he didn’t care.”

That was true.

“I thought if Hawthorne closed, Lucas would thank me later.”

Maybe.

“And when Florence wouldn’t sign?”

“I hated her.”

There.

Not:

I lost control.

Not:

I was protecting jobs.

“I hated her.”

Then she described the black-water moment.

Florence said the Hart family was “drinking from sewer money.”

Gwendolyn filled the pitcher.

Wanted to humiliate her.

Did she want Florence to choke?

“No.”

Did she know forcing water could be dangerous?

“Yes.”

Important.

Then my slap.

“I thought Lucas would kill me.”

I did not.

She said my face scared her.

Fair.

I had scared myself.

Then:

“Why point at the camera?”

“Because Florence had been secretly recording me.”

“Did you think that justified what Lucas saw?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“I wanted him angry at her too.”

The entire marriage in one sentence.

She wanted shared blame to reduce hers.

Later, she offered to plead to elder abuse and financial conspiracy if prosecutors reduced incarceration exposure.

No agreement yet.

Then another defendant emerged.

Patricia Wells.

Family-office notary.

Forensics showed her login credentials were used on the false continuity certificate.

She denied personally notarizing.

Video logs showed she was on vacation in Arizona at the recorded time.

Good.

Credential misuse.

No charge against her for that signature.

But she had ignored warnings about shared passwords.

Employment consequence.

Not conspiracy.

Again:

Systems fail without everyone being criminal.

Then prosecutors identified who uploaded the false certificate to the lender data room.

Adrian Hart.

He said Gwendolyn emailed it marked final.

Did he know it was false?

Messages:

Adrian:

Florence actually signed?

Gwendolyn:

Close enough. Dinner fixes rest.

He responded:

Jesus.

Then uploaded.

That was knowledge enough to investigate.

Hartbridge’s crisis had gained another defendant.
