Chapter 7 - WHAT THE KNOCKS MEANT

Eleanor contacted me through a church secretary.

We met in a chapel during weekday hours, both of us visible from the open office.

She looked smaller without Victor beside her.

“What do the three knocks mean?” I asked.

Her fingers moved over the pearls at her throat.

“They mean no one enters until the husband is finished.”

“Finished doing what?”

She looked toward the door.

“Teaching.”

The word came from Gregory’s sentence in the cabin.

My father taught my mother to heel.

Eleanor gave me a brass key.

“Old boathouse. Lower drawer.”

“Why not go to police?”

“Because Victor controls my medical decisions.”

Before she could explain, two resort security employees entered with a family nurse.

The nurse said Eleanor had missed medication and was confused.

Eleanor stood without resistance.

As they escorted her away, she said, “Do not trust Dr. Halpern.”

I did not follow.

For once, I obeyed the boundary between urgency and recklessness.

Police searched the boathouse under a warrant based on Eleanor’s statement and the property case.

The brass key opened a drawer containing old security ledgers.

Most entries were ordinary.

Several used three repeated words:

Correction.

Witness.

Transfer.

Dates matched Eleanor’s injury, Lauren’s settlement, and my wedding.

Beside my name was written:

North Ridge — Phase Two.

The ledger did not explain Phase Two.

It proved someone had documented my wedding night as an operation.

Then Gregory filed an emergency request to become temporary manager of my assets, supported by a physician’s affidavit.

The doctor was Halpern.

He claimed I suffered combat-related dissociation.

He had never examined me.
