Chapter 10 - THE HARTMAN LESSON
The hard drive revealed the central plan.
Victor had used the cabin for decades to enforce obedience within his family. He assaulted Eleanor there while security remained outside. Gregory grew up watching violence described as correction.
When Gregory’s first fiancée refused a property transfer, the same system was used again.
Security disabled cameras.
Halpern prepared medical explanations.
Family counsel created settlements.
Victor entered after three knocks to control the scene.
My wedding protocol combined that pattern with the North Ridge expansion.
The champagne was intended to weaken me.
Gregory would frighten me into signing the access authorization and postnuptial agreement stored in the cabin safe.
If I refused, he would provoke a defensive reaction.
Victor would enter with the prepared psychiatric affidavit, emergency guardianship petition, and settlement.
The family would describe me as a combat-trained bride suffering a violent breakdown.
The second keycard beneath the door was not an offer of rescue.
It was a signal that Victor was waiting to enter after Gregory had subdued me.
The bat had been selected because photographs of me holding it would support their story.
My military training disrupted the sequence.
The hard drive contained planning emails, draft affidavits, camera instructions, property documents, and earlier recordings of Eleanor and Lauren.
Its discovery did not instantly end the case.
I had touched the boathouse drawer before police obtained the warrant.
Defense attorneys challenged the drive’s chain of custody and claimed files could have been planted.
The prosecution needed independent sources for every important fact.
Then the most important witness disappeared.
Eleanor failed to appear at a court hearing.
Victor said she had entered a private neurological clinic voluntarily.
The clinic refused to disclose her location.
Halpern submitted records claiming she suffered progressive dementia.
Her church secretary produced a letter Eleanor wrote the week before.
If Victor says I am confused, ask why my confusion always begins when I speak.
Before a judge could review the records, Gregory violated the no-contact order.
A photograph of me leaving Naomi’s office arrived from an unknown number.
The message read:
YOU BEAT ME ONCE. MY FAMILY ONLY NEEDS TO WIN ONCE.

She did not appear conscious.
