Chapter 23 - MIRIAM’S LAST REPORT

Thomas Mercer died when I was forty-three.

He left Miriam’s remaining papers to a university military-history archive.

Before transfer, he gave me one sealed envelope.

“She wanted you to have this at the end.”

“I thought we did the end.”

“She knew you’d say that.”

Inside was Miriam’s last private report.

Not engineering.

Not evidence.

A reflection written during cancer treatment.

She described May 14.

My anger.

Her own.

Then:

Ashlynn believes courage means staying in the fight until the institution admits you were right. I taught her some of that, and I regret it. There are times to leave. The failure was not that she left. The failure was that the system required exhausted junior people to carry questions leaders already had enough evidence to ask.

I sat alone for a long time.

For years, I had blamed myself for not becoming Miriam.

She did not want that.

Another paragraph:

If she ever sees this, tell her skill is not obligation. Being able to fight does not mean she should have to.

That line reached backward into the honeymoon suite.

Gregory’s defense had argued I could handle myself.

Miriam answered years before he ever raised the club.

Ability does not create duty to endure danger.

I donated my operational papers to the archive under restricted access.

Personal correspondence stayed private.

My old training résumé went too.

The résumé Gregory had read.

The line that once made me feel clever became evidence of how predators misread skill as challenge instead of boundary.

At a lecture, a student asked:

“If you had known Gregory’s plan before the wedding, could you have entrapped him?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because my goal was never to catch him committing a crime. My goal would have been to leave.”

That disappointed half the room.

Good.

Real safety is often narratively unsatisfying.

No confrontation.

No takedown.

Door opens.

Person leaves.

Story ends before the exciting part.

I wished that had been mine.

I was grateful I survived the version I got.
