Chapter 21 - THE DAY GREGORY WAS RELEASED

Gregory served most of his sentence before becoming eligible for supervised release.

Victim notification arrived.

I was forty.

The honeymoon suite felt like another lifetime.

My body disagreed.

For two nights, I checked every lock twice.

Not because Gregory had threatened me recently.

Because memory listens poorly to calendars.

His release conditions prohibited contact with me.

Restricted weapon possession.

Required continued treatment.

Barred employment in defense contracting and corporate fiduciary roles for a defined period.

He moved to Colorado.

Worked in warehouse logistics.

No executive title.

Eleanor visited once after six months.

She told me only because I asked.

“He looks older.”

“So do we.”

“He apologized again.”

“To you?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“For becoming something I had to survive twice.”

That sentence hurt.

Charles.

Then Gregory.

Eleanor had spent motherhood trying to prevent repetition and still watched it happen.

“Did you forgive him?”

She gave me a tired smile.

“I stopped asking that question around year three.”

I laughed.

Apparently I had influenced her after all.

Gregory sent no letter the year of release.

The restraint mattered.

A journalist found him.

He refused interview.

That mattered too.

Change is often measured by what someone stops demanding.

I was engaged by then.

Not married.

My partner, Leah Morgan, was a civil engineer I met through a transit safety project.

She knew my history before our first date because the case was public.

She never asked to see the honeymoon footage.

That was one reason I trusted her.

We had been together four years.

Marriage mattered less to both of us than clarity.

When I told her Gregory was released, she asked:

“What do you want tonight?”

“Pizza.”

“Excellent.”

No dramatic protection ritual.

No promise to fight him.

No surveillance spiral.

We ate pizza and watched a terrible home-renovation show.

My nervous system learned release could coexist with ordinary evening.
