Chapter 25 - GRACE BECOMES A MOTHER

Grace had a daughter at thirty-five.
Her name was Elodie.
At four, Elodie wanted bangs.
Grace froze.
I saw it.
She saw me seeing it.
“Mom.”
“I said nothing.”
“You thought loudly.”
Elodie held child-safe pretend scissors.
“I want hair like Mia.”
Mia was a cartoon character.
Grace asked:
“Do you want real bangs or pretend?”
“Real.”
“Okay. We’ll talk to a stylist.”
No panic.
No:
Your father loved your hair.
No inherited sacred braid.
At the salon, Grace asked:
“Do you want to sit alone or with me?”
“Alone.”
“Do you want her to cut now?”
“Yes.”
The stylist showed every step.
Elodie changed her mind halfway.
“No shorter.”
The stylist stopped.
Uneven.
Grace laughed.
“We can leave it.”
Elodie looked in mirror.
“Funny.”
“Your choice.”
They left with half-finished bangs.
Two weeks later Elodie wanted them fixed.
They went back.
That simple.

Hair belonged to the person wearing it.
A lesson my family had needed a court case to learn.
