Chapter 24 - MEADOW CUTS HER HAIR

At eighteen, Meadow grew her hair almost to her waist again.
Then one Saturday she came into my kitchen.
“I’m shaving it.”
I dropped a spoon.
She laughed.
“Mom.”
“Sorry.”
“Not bald.”
“Okay.”
“Undercut.”
I tried to look normal.
Failed.
She saw.
“Does that bother you?”
“Yes.”
“Do you want me not to?”
“No.”
That was the test I actually wanted to pass.
Not secret.
Not engineered.
A clear moment where another person’s choice triggered my fear.
She went to a salon with friends.
Came back with one side shaved close above the ear and long hair sweeping over the other.
She looked delighted.
Judith saw a photograph through Meadow’s permission and said:
“I would have hated that once.”
Meadow replied:
“I know.”
Judith:
“Do you like it?”
Meadow:
“Yes.”
Judith:
“Then it belongs to you.”
That exchange meant more than a dramatic apology could.
Dustin texted:
Looks cool.
Then:
Is commenting okay?
Meadow:
May you like
Yes lol.
