Chapter 20 - JUDITH’S LETTER

Judith wrote Meadow from custody.

The first letter was rejected by the therapist.

Hair grows back and I hope someday you understand Grandma wanted to protect you from vanity.

No.

The second:

I went too far.

Still centered magnitude, not consent.

The third arrived months later.

I shaved your head after you said no. I held you in the chair. I blamed you when the clippers cut near your ear. I told myself your father’s approval mattered more than your refusal. That was wrong.

Dr. Grant approved it for Meadow to decide.

She read it at nine.

Then asked:

“Do I have to answer?”

“No.”

“Can I throw it away?”

“Yes.”

She folded it.

“Not yet.”

Six months later, she wrote one sentence.

Why did you hate me looking like Mom?

Judith’s reply:

I did not hate you. I was afraid you would become a woman I could not control, and I called that fear concern.

I read the sentence only because Meadow asked me to.

It was the first time Judith understood herself more clearly than defensively.

Meadow did not resume contact.

Not then.

Insight did not create access automatically.

At ten, Meadow requested one therapeutic video call.

Judith looked older.

Her hair had gone almost completely gray.

Meadow wore hers in a short bob.

Judith cried.

“You look beautiful.”

Meadow stiffened.

Judith corrected herself.

“I’m sorry. I should have asked whether you wanted me to comment.”

Meadow relaxed slightly.

“Okay.”

They spoke for twelve minutes.

No hug possible.

No demand for another call.

Afterward Meadow said:

“She sounds different.”

“Do you want to see her again?”

May you like

“Maybe.”

Maybe was enough.
