Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN WALKS AWAY

The woman Duncan intended to marry never married him.
She met me once more voluntarily.
No friendship.
No sisterhood montage.
She wanted to return gifts purchased with marital funds.
Jewelry.
Furniture.
A car deposit.
My attorney told her not everything needed to be returned.
If gifts were legally completed using Duncan’s separate funds, they were hers.
If marital dissipation claims applied, that was between spouses unless fraud involved her knowingly.
She had not known most sources.
She returned what forensic tracing clearly connected to joint money.
Kept a watch Duncan bought from his own account.
Fine.
People wanted me to hate her.
I didn’t have enough energy.
She had lied to herself.
Duncan lied to everyone.
She did not hit me.
She did not tell him to hurt the baby.
She warned him not to.
That mattered.
Before she left, she asked:
“Did he ever love you?”
I stared.
“What?”
“He said your marriage was dead for years.”
I almost laughed.
“Why do you need me to answer that?”
She looked embarrassed.
“I don’t.”
“Good.”
Then:
“Did he love you?”
She looked toward the door.
“I thought so.”
There.
Same trap.
Different room.

We left without hugging.
Healthy.
