Chapter 26 - MARK’S LETTER TO EVAN

When Evan turned forty, I gave him the final sealed letter Mark had addressed to him.
The estate instructions said:
After Evan is old enough to understand that inheritance is not love.
I had waited longer than necessary.
Evan opened it at my kitchen table.
Son,
If the Bennett company survives, you do not owe it your life.
If the money survives, you do not owe it gratitude.
If none of it survives, you are still my son.
I spent too long thinking I could fix my family privately before telling your mother the truth.
I was wrong.
Secrets that protect power eventually protect harm.
Eat when you are hungry.
Leave tables where love has to be earned.
Dad.
Evan stopped reading.
His eyes filled.
“Eat when you are hungry.”
“Yes.”
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“Did he know Grandma would do Thanksgiving?”
“Not that exact day.”
“But he knew the rule.”
“Yes.”
Evan folded the letter.
Then got up and opened my refrigerator.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m hungry.”

He made a sandwich.
I laughed until I cried.
