Chapter 24 - THE LAST TRUST REVIEW
At thirty-five, Evan dissolved the remaining protective trust structure legally available to him and moved assets into ordinary diversified accounts and philanthropic vehicles.
He kept no special family governance.
The final trustee meeting included Rachel Brooks, now near retirement.
She asked:
“Do you understand what ends today?”
“Yes.”
“What do you gain?”
“Direct control.”
“What do you lose?”
“Guardrails.”
“What happens if someone I love asks me to pledge everything?”
“I say no or get independent advice.”
“Can your mother override you?”
“No.”
I pretended to look offended.
Evan laughed.
The documents were signed.
No drama.
No Diane.
No Mark.
No hidden clause.
A family system that once conditioned dinner on obedience ended in a conference room with a man reading every page.
Rachel gave him Mark’s original trust summary.
“Keep or destroy.”
Evan handed it to me.
“You want it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“It has your father’s handwriting.”
“Then keep it.”
