Chapter 6 - THE OTHER CHILD
Owen Daniel Vale lived with a foster family two counties away.
He had entered state care after his mother died from an overdose.
The deceased woman’s real name was Allison Reed.
She had worked as Henry Vale’s executive assistant.
Four years earlier, she gave birth using Jessica’s identity and private insurance information supplied by Daniel.
DNA testing confirmed Daniel was Owen’s biological father.
Jessica had known nothing about him.
Melissa had known from birth.
The education reserve was not for Cooper.
It was a hidden fund for Daniel’s other son.
“Why use Jessica’s name?” Mara asked investigators.
Because Allison was married to someone else at the time, and Daniel wanted no public paternity record connected to himself.
Henry arranged the identity substitution.
When Allison died, Henry quietly placed Owen into care rather than acknowledge him.
Daniel visited twice under the name Uncle David.
He paid no lawful support.
The discovery transformed the custody motive.
Daniel did not merely want Cooper’s trust for himself.
He wanted access to move money toward another child without admitting the affair that produced him.
Melissa referred to Owen in messages as “the stronger branch.”
Cooper was not being protected as Daniel’s son.

The child-welfare agency appointed independent counsel for Owen.
I did not seek custody.
He was innocent, but I was a stranger recovering from violence and caring for Cooper.
His foster parents wanted to adopt him.

Daniel’s parental rights required review due abandonment, fraud, and criminal conduct.
Cooper learned only that his father had another child when Dr. Cole decided he could carry the information safely.
“Is he my brother?” Cooper asked.
“Biologically, yes.”
“Did he help Daddy hurt you?”
“No. He is four.”
“Does Grandma make him remember stories?”
“I don’t know. He is safe with other adults now.”
Cooper placed the broken dinosaur beside his bed.
“I don’t want him to be scared.”
Compassion survived in him where Daniel expected rivalry.
Melissa petitioned for grandparent contact with Owen.
The agency opposed it after reviewing her messages and role in the fraud.
She claimed blood entitled her to protect him.
Judge Callahan replied, “Blood does not erase documented manipulation of another child.”
The financial investigators traced Owen’s reserve.
The account had received money from the fraudulent Compass Ridge loans.
Daniel intended to use the existence of a second son later as leverage against Melissa and Henry.
He kept a recorded message.
If anything happens to me, Claire learns about Owen, Melissa loses the trust restructuring, and Henry goes to prison.
Daniel had blackmailed his own conspirators.
They had still trusted him enough to proceed.
Then Aaron Blake produced an email from Henry.
After the birthday incident, remove Daniel. His violence makes him unreliable. Melissa will control Cooper directly.
The conspiracy had two competing endings.
Daniel planned to betray Melissa and Henry.
Melissa and Henry planned to sacrifice Daniel once I was discredited.
The cake assault did not merely expose the plan.
It triggered a war among the people who built it.
That war became dangerous when Henry disappeared from court-ordered monitoring.
