Chapter 5 - THE DINOSAUR’S EYE
Police recovered the broken cake decoration from the hospital evidence bag.
The plastic dinosaur had been advertised as a light-up toy.
Inside its left eye was a microcamera.
Jessica had hidden it there before the party.
The device recorded the cake table from below.
It captured Daniel and Melissa preparing for the assault.
It also captured Jessica alone with Cooper fifteen minutes earlier.
She crouched beside him.
“If Daddy and Mommy argue, what do you say?”
Cooper looked confused.
“That Mommy gets mad.”
“And what did Mommy threaten to do?”
“Break the cake.”
“Good boy.”
“I don’t want Mommy mad.”
Jessica touched his shoulder.
“You’re helping her by telling the judge the story.”
My son had not invented the custody statements.
They had rehearsed him.
The camera also recorded something Jessica did not mention in her message.
After Daniel struck me and guests turned toward the doors, she removed the memory card from the dinosaur.
Then she slipped a different card into Daniel’s jacket pocket while pretending to comfort him.
The police had seized his clothing during booking.
The card remained inside the lining.
It contained the complete video and months of other recordings.
Jessica had been documenting Daniel and Melissa as carefully as they documented me.
Her attorney requested a meeting.
Jessica admitted the affair began nine months earlier.
Daniel recruited her initially because she was a notary and freelance media consultant.
He paid her to record me.
When she learned about the trust fraud, she began copying evidence to protect herself.
“Why smile while he hurt me?” I asked through the prosecutor.
Jessica stared at the table.
“Because Melissa was watching me.”
“You could have called police.”
“Yes.”
“You could have warned me.”
“Yes.”
“You coached my son.”
“Yes.”
“Why should I believe anything now?”
“You shouldn’t without corroboration.”
It was the first intelligent answer she gave.
Jessica surrendered messages, recordings, bank records, and the hidden folder password.
She did not become my ally.
She became a participant trying to reduce the consequences she faced.
Her evidence revealed Daniel’s larger plan.
After gaining temporary control of Cooper’s trust, he intended to divorce me, seek sole custody, and relocate to Arizona.
Jessica believed she would join him.
Daniel’s messages to Melissa showed something else.
Once custody is secured, Jessica becomes the unstable mistress who framed Claire. We give her money and make her disappear.
Jessica had helped him construct a trap that included her as the final scapegoat.
She cried when prosecutors showed her.
Her tears did not erase Cooper’s coached fear.
The state charged her with conspiracy, forgery, evidence tampering, and child-related coercion.
She accepted a cooperation agreement requiring truthful testimony and asset forfeiture.
Aaron Blake also cooperated.
Henry remained defiant.
Melissa called every witness a liar purchased by my wealth.
Daniel’s criminal attorney attacked the bracelet recording as an illegal private interception.
Mara argued that I recorded conversations occurring in my presence at my son’s party and activated an emergency system after assault.
The admissibility question would depend on state law, consent rules, and judicial findings.
Even if portions were excluded, video and independent witnesses remained.
The financial investigation continued.
The twelve million dollars had not all gone to property and luxury expenses.
Three million entered an account titled COOPER SHAW EDUCATION RESERVE.
At first, that looked protective.
Then investigators examined the beneficiary.
Not Cooper.
A child named Owen Daniel Vale.
Born four years earlier.
Father listed as Daniel Shaw.
Mother listed as Jessica Cole.
Jessica stared at the birth certificate and denied ever having a child.
The document used her identity.

Someone had given birth under Jessica’s name.
