Chapter 7 - THE WARRANTY
Every major sale contains representations.
One of ours stated:
Salerno Holdings has disclosed all known material third-party economic interests affecting Harbor East.
If false?
Closing delayed.
Potential indemnity.
Buyer could renegotiate.
Nothing apocalyptic.
Then another certification.
I was scheduled to sign at the gala’s private post-dinner session.
Not the final sale agreement.
A lender diligence certificate authorizing Meridian Crown and financing partners to proceed on assumption no undisclosed family trust claim existed.
If Celina knew of the Marlow claim and I signed without knowing, she might believe the process would pass a point of no return.
Legally, it would not.
But psychologically and commercially, unwinding would become harder.
There.
The deadline.
She found the blue file at five.
I was scheduled to sign at ten.
Owen saw her.
She needed him silent until I signed.
Then what?
Probably return file later.
Or claim she discovered it afterward.
Could she have planned that?
Messages supported.
CELINA TO JULIAN:
If certificate is signed first, counsel can solve Marlow later as diligence exception.
JULIAN:
Do not do that.
CELINA:
It keeps momentum.
JULIAN:
It creates a disclosure problem.
Then:
CELINA:
Dante will cancel the entire sale if he sees Mara’s letter tonight.
Maybe.
Would I?
I do not know.
That uncertainty mattered.
Celina knew my grief.
She had watched me stop transactions over smaller family principles.
She may have feared I would destroy a legitimate deal emotionally.
So she decided for me.
Again.
Then the brass key.
Where did she get it?
From my father’s desk drawer.
Household inventory showed key existed.
Celina asked a staff member where old archive keys were stored six weeks earlier.
Planning.
Then hidden room.
Why there?
She knew about it from renovation plans.
Two years earlier she proposed converting west corridor to gallery space.
Architectural plans showed service passage.
Did she use it before Owen?
Dust analysis suggested recent foot traffic but could not prove frequency.
Nora said she once heard Celina talking behind painting weeks earlier.
Maybe storing documents.
Then forensic sweep found fibers from a blue archival folder on blanket?
That seems too CSI. Avoid.
They found ordinary paper fragments, no proof.
Then Owen said:
“Celina put blue under blanket.”
Interesting.
He may have seen folder brought into room.
Police reexamined.
No blue folder.
Maybe she retrieved after locking him and removed it.
Timeline:
5:31 Celina and Owen west corridor.
5:49 Celina returns alone.
6:02 flower room.
So she had eighteen minutes with him and file.
Perhaps she left Owen, carried file out, disposed.
Then at 7:36 Nora discovered.
Why not release Owen before gala?
Because she needed silence until certificate.
But did she expect him to remain almost five hours?
Likely.
She left water and crackers.
Prepared.
That destroyed “panic.”
Then purchase record.
Small water bottles and snack bowls kept in family kitchen.
No special purchase.
But blanket was placed there earlier.
Security footage weeks prior showed Celina entering west corridor with folded blanket.
There.
Premeditation.
Not necessarily intended for Owen that night.
Could be storage.
But disturbing.
Then Nora told me:
“I heard him crying behind the painting once before.”
My stomach dropped.
“When?”
“Maybe a month ago.”
“Did you open it?”
“No. I didn’t know.”
“What happened?”
“Mrs. Salerno said Owen was upstairs.”
“Did you see him later?”
“Yes.”
“How long after?”
“Maybe twenty minutes.”
Could Celina have used room as punishment before?
Owen’s interviewer asked carefully.
He said:
“Two times.”
Not certain count.
Then:
“Dark room when I touch stuff.”
There.
This was no single financial panic.
Celina had been using a hidden room to punish a four-year-old for curiosity.
The gala merely made the punishment longer.
That changed the criminal case.
Then my divorce lawyer asked:
“Was Celina Owen’s legal guardian?”
Stepparent.
No adoption.
No independent custody rights.
She lived with him and cared for him with my permission.
But after this?
Protective order.
No contact.
Then Celina’s attorney changed tone.
They requested mental-health evaluation and began discussing plea rather than denial.
But before anything could settle, Julian produced one final message Celina sent at 5:50 p.m., one minute after leaving Owen behind the wall:
He knows about Mara now. After tonight, Dante can know too.
