Chapter 16 - THE FIRST TIME OWEN FORGAVE HER

Owen never announced forgiveness.

He showed it accidentally.

At seventeen, Celina was hospitalized after a car accident.

Minor compared with initial fear.

Broken wrist.

Concussion.

No life threat.

Owen heard through Julian.

He said:

“Can we send flowers?”

I looked at him.

“We?”

“Me. Whatever.”

His choice.

We sent under his name.

Celina replied:

Thank you.

Nothing else.

Then two weeks later Owen asked to visit.

I drove but waited outside.

He spent forty minutes.

Later:

“She looks terrible.”

“That’s kind.”

“She knows.”

Then:

“I think I forgive her.”

I did not react dramatically.

“What does that mean to you?”

“I don’t want bad things to happen to her.”

“Did you before?”

“When I was little maybe.”

Fair.

“Do you trust her?”

“Not with keys.”

Dark humor.

He laughed.

Then:

“But maybe with lunch.”

Specific trust.

Good.

Then I asked:

“Do you want me to forgive her?”

“No. Your problem.”

Correct.

Then Celina and I eventually had one conversation.

Neutral office first? Years later, no need.

Coffee.

She said:

“Owen told me he forgives me.”

“I know.”

“You seem bothered.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

Maybe.

“Part of me wants him angrier.”

She nodded.

“Because anger feels protective.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“He's not four.”

I knew.

Hard.

Then I asked:

“Do you forgive me for hitting you?”

“I did years ago.”

“Why?”

“Because you owned it.”

Then:

“Do you forgive yourself?”

“I don't know.”

She shrugged.

“Your problem.”

Apparently Owen learned from her.

Then our marriage.

She said:

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

“Don't say it like evidence.”

I smiled.

Then:

“I loved Owen too.”

That was harder.

“I believe you did sometimes.”

She flinched.

Then nodded.

Fair.

No absolution.

Then Mara.

Celina asked:

“Do you still talk to her?”

“What?”

“In your head.”

Sometimes.

“Yes.”

She smiled sadly.

“I spent years competing with conversations I couldn't hear.”

“I should have told you more.”

“Maybe.”

Then:

“But I should have stopped competing.”

Both.

Then we left.

No reunion.

No flirtation.

Closure enough.

Then Owen graduated high school.

Celina attended?

His choice.

Yes.

She sat with general guests, not family row.

Nora attended too.

Mara’s cousin Elise.

Complex.

Owen crossed stage.

No one argued who mother was.

Mara absent.

Celina former stepmother.

Nora witness/friend.

Family can have multiple truths.

Then afterward Owen took one photograph with Celina.

One with Nora.

One with me.

No symbolic combined shot.

His choices.

Then college.

He chose architecture.

I laughed.

“Because of walls?”

“Because buildings are cool.”

May you like

Good.

Trauma did not own his career either.
