Chapter 25 - THE EMERGENCY NUMBER

Jamie found the old emergency phone in a box.

We thought it had been recycled.

Apparently security had returned one duplicate model? Need avoid inconsistency. Better: he found the packaging and instruction card, not phone. Let's make it the tiny laminated card with the number.

He was thirty.

Claire was four.

The same age he had been.

He held the card:

PRESS ONCE FOR DAD.

He laughed.

“You laminated this?”

“I was anxious.”

“You were insane.”

“Both.”

Then he asked:

“Should Claire have one?”

“Your parenting choice.”

He considered.

They gave her a child-safe watch with parents and two emergency contacts.

Not because family dangerous.

Because access is good.

Then Claire asked:

“What if Daddy doesn’t answer?”

Jamie said:

“Mom answers. Grandpa can. Aunt Megan. Lots of people.”

Multiple routes.

No gatekeeper.

I liked that.

Then Jamie told her the family story in tiny pieces over years.

Not at four.

At four, only:

If an adult scares you, call us.

No inheritance.

No real-grandchild language.

Good.

Then one day Claire asked why family table had a repaired mark underneath.

Jamie said:

“An uncle made a bad choice a long time ago.”

“Who?”

“Uncle Brandon.”

Brandon, now older, was present.

He answered himself:

“I scared your dad with a bat when he was little.”

Claire’s eyes widened.

“Why?”

“Because I listened to Grandpa Victor instead of being a safe uncle.”

“Did you hit?”

“Table.”

“Bad.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Are you bad now?”

Brandon smiled sadly.

“I try not to be.”

Good.

No legend.

Then Claire asked Jamie:

“Did Grandpa Rocco save you?”

Jamie looked at me.

“He answered the phone.”

I felt something in my throat.

Not:

He fought everyone.

Not:

He hit Brandon.

He answered.

That was the memory I wanted.

Then he added:

“And then he slapped Uncle Brandon and had to do court homework.”

Claire laughed.

Humility survives generations.

Then:

“Why slap?”

Jamie answered:

“Because Grandpa Rocco was angry and thought being protective meant he could punish people himself. He learned better.”

I nodded.

My own accountability survived too.

Then Claire asked:

“Did Grandpa Victor learn?”

Jamie said:

“Some.”

The family phrase again.

Good.

No heroes.

No monsters only.

People who made choices and changed some.

Then he gave Claire the laminated card to use as bookmark.

The emergency number no longer active.

Just history.

She lost it within a week.

We found it under couch.

Normal.
