Chapter 5 - THE FIANCÉE AT THE SCHOOL GATE

Arthur’s fiancée appeared outside April’s school.
Her name was Celeste Ward. She was twenty-eight, polished, and already wearing the engagement ring Arthur had bought before Mom died.
She told the receptionist she was a family friend authorized to collect April.
The school called Grandpa.
Police escorted Celeste away without arrest because she left when instructed.
She later claimed Arthur had told her the court order allowed contact.
It did not.
At the next hearing, Arthur’s lawyer described the incident as a misunderstanding.
Nora produced Celeste’s text to the school:
APRIL’S FATHER NEEDS HER BROUGHT TO THE WILLIAMS OFFICE BEFORE THE DOCUMENT HEARING.
The judge suspended Arthur’s visits.
He blamed Celeste.
Celeste blamed an assistant.
Everyone made mistakes that benefited the same plan.
The court finally authorized opening the sealed envelope under controlled conditions.
Arthur filed an emergency appeal.
The opening was delayed forty-eight hours.
During that delay, Williams Residential Group announced it could miss payroll unless Grandpa signed an urgent financing package.
Grandpa had retired but still owned a special voting share inherited from Grandma.
Arthur needed his approval to place several apartment buildings into collateral.
“You are holding employees hostage,” Arthur told him.
Grandpa reviewed the papers.
My mother’s electronic signature appeared on one authorization dated four days after she died.
Arthur called it an administrative error.
Nora called the lender.
The financing package also listed Rachel, April, and me as contingent beneficiaries whose interests had been waived.
Our signatures appeared nowhere.
Instead, Arthur had signed as our natural guardian.
He had claimed authority over our property before seeking custody.
The family-court fight was not only about where we lived.
It was about what he could control if we returned.
That night Celeste called me from an unknown number.
“I did not know what happened to Rose’s accounts,” she said.
“What accounts?”
She began crying.
Then Arthur’s voice sounded behind her.
The call ended.
Minutes later, Celeste sent one photograph.

A wall safe stood open inside Arthur’s office.
On the shelf was a second cream envelope bearing Mom’s handwriting.
