Chapter 25 - CECILY

For years, people described me as protective.
Sometimes as praise.
Sometimes accusation.
I had to learn protection could also become control.
When Merrick was twelve, I tried to stop him from going to an overnight adaptive-sports camp.
He stared at me.
“Why?”
“What if you need something?”
“They have staff.”
“What if your chair breaks?”
“They have mechanics.”
“What if—”
“Mom.”
I stopped.
He looked exactly like I must have looked at Agatha once.

“You want to go?”
“Yes.”
“Then go.”
He did.
Had an incredible time.

Not into trust auditing.
I did not turn trauma into a brand.
I remained good at the work I had always done.
Eventually I remarried.
Daniel Reeves.
A high-school history teacher.
No connection to Harrow Mobility.
No secret inheritance.
Merrick liked him slowly.
Emmett behaved respectfully.
