Chapter 14 - THE LEDGER WITH MISSING PAGES

After Grant’s conviction, Holloway Development entered restructuring.

The receiver sold one division, completed safe projects, and created a compensation process for tenants and clients harmed by defective work.

Insurance covered part.

Company assets covered part.

Creditors absorbed losses.

Employees lost jobs despite having committed no fraud.

Accountability did not return everyone to the life they held before discovery.

Diane received a reduced custodial sentence after pleading guilty to obstruction, false reporting, identity-related misconduct, and conspiracy connected to unauthorized financial approvals.

The court considered Grant’s coercion.

It also considered her repeated independent opportunities, financial benefit, and participation in the medical cover story.

At sentencing, she said:

“I loved my daughter and still treated her as the easiest person to sacrifice.”

I did not respond in court.

Her sentence did not require my forgiveness.

C. Reyes Consulting was dissolved under court supervision.

Funds traceable to my name were placed into a disputed-assets account pending allocation among victims, creditors, and any legitimate beneficial interest I possessed.

I did not receive $1.6 million simply because the shell company carried my name.

Much of the money came from financing, duplicated invoices, and diverted trust assets.

Ownership on fraudulent papers did not make every dollar mine.

The Reyes Family Settlement Trust required deeper review.

A neutral trust examiner concluded that Michael’s original 2003 instruction was authentic.

The 2008 amendment expanding Nolan’s authority was likely assembled from a genuine signature page attached to substituted terms.

“Likely” was not enough for every legal purpose.

The original remained missing.

Diane testified that Nolan brought documents to Michael’s hospital room after the car accident.

She accompanied him.

Michael remembered signing urgent business authorizations but not a trust amendment.

Hospital visitor logs listed Nolan and Diane together.

A nurse remembered papers.

She did not know their contents.

The ledger from Nolan’s storage unit contained missing pages covering the exact period.

Forensic examination showed they had been removed recently.

A partial indentation remained on the following sheet.

Specialists recovered fragments:

M.R. SIGNATURES RETAINED

D.R. WITNESS

C BENEFICIARY NOT TO RECEIVE NOTICE

The initials suggested a plan.

They did not identify every act.

Nolan’s attorney contacted prosecutors from Nassau.

He claimed Nolan required medical treatment and feared Michael would use political influence against him.

Michael possessed no political authority over extradition.

Nolan offered to return if granted immunity for trust administration.

Prosecutors refused.

Negotiations continued.

Then the second phone recovered from Diane’s purse received a delayed encrypted message.

The device had remained in police storage and isolated from ordinary networks until forensic examination.

Once specialists recreated a controlled connection, the message arrived from an account labeled NORTH.

YOU SHOULD HAVE DESTROYED THE TOKEN.

A second followed.

MICHAEL STILL DOESN’T KNOW WHO FUNDED THE 2008 TRANSFER.

Detective Ruiz showed the messages to Michael, Rebecca, and me.

“What does that mean?” I asked.

Michael shook his head.

The 2008 transfer into the settlement trust came from an entity named Bellweather Claims Recovery.

Michael’s records described it as proceeds from his lawsuit.

The receiver found no direct payment from the settlement court registry.

Money entered through Bellweather.

Bellweather had been dissolved years earlier.

Its final manager was Nolan Price.

The listed beneficial owner was redacted under an old confidentiality order.

Rebecca requested the sealed court file.

The judge authorized limited review.

Inside was a settlement schedule naming three contributors.

Reyes Infrastructure.

Nolan Price Legal Services.

And Holloway Family Holdings.

Grant’s family had funded part of the trust before Diane married him.

That fact changed the timeline.

Grant had not entered my life after the money existed.

His family was connected to the money before I met him.

Michael stared at the schedule.

“I never saw this version.”

“Your signature is on the cover page,” Rebecca said.

“I signed the global settlement.”

“Then someone inserted a contributor schedule afterward, or you failed to review it.”

“Yes.”

No comforting interpretation erased both possibilities.

The sealed file contained one more reference:

SIDE LETTER — MINOR BENEFICIARY DISCLOSURE DEFERRED UNTIL AGE 25.

I was twenty-four.

My twenty-fifth birthday was six weeks away.

The side letter was missing.
