CHAP 3 — Julian Storms the Hospital

Julian and Eleanor arrived fifteen minutes later.

They entered the emergency department like weather.

Julian pushed past a nurse, expensive coat open, tie crooked, face flushed with outrage. Eleanor followed in pearls and a cashmere wrap, one hand pressed to her forehead as if hunger had brought her to the edge of death.

The glass door to my room slid open.

Julian pointed at me.

“Are you done with your little theatrical performance? My mother hasn’t eaten all day!”

The doctor turned slowly.

A nurse behind him went still.

Eleanor gave a trembling sigh.

“Good heavens. Look at her just lounging there. I am practically fainting from starvation, and she has nurses waiting on her.”

My left leg rested in a massive white fracture brace. My dress was cut open at the side. My face was bruised where I had struck the pavement. Blood still marked the bandage below my knee.

For a moment, I simply looked at them.

Not with surprise.

That had died earlier.

With recognition.

This was who they were when they thought no witness mattered.

I pressed the emergency nurse call button.

“Please have hospital security escort these individuals out,” I said clearly. “They are interfering with my medical care.”

Julian’s face darkened.

“You’re throwing your own husband out of a hospital?”

“A man who demands a home-cooked meal from a woman with a shattered leg doesn’t deserve that title.”

Eleanor pointed at me.

“When you are stripped of our family name, you won’t leave with a single silver spoon.”

I almost smiled.

The Vance family name was not worth the silver spoon she imagined came with it.

Two security guards arrived.

Julian lifted both hands, suddenly performing reason.

“This is a private marital matter.”

The older guard looked at the brace on my leg.

“Sir, step away from the patient.”

Julian laughed sharply.

“I’m not leaving until she apologizes to my mother.”

That sentence did it.

Not the lunch.

Not the police report.

Not the threat over the accounts.

Apologizes.

I opened my laptop on the rolling tray.

Chloe had arrived through the other entrance while Julian was shouting. She stood silently beside my bed, eyes wet with fury, charger already plugged into the wall.

I logged into the Aurora emergency portal.

Julian noticed.

“What are you doing?”

I tapped once.

Then again.

Emergency asset hold.

Joint account freeze.

Executive exposure review.

Subsidiary ethics alert.

Corporate trust suspension.

I looked at him through the glass partition as security blocked his path.

“I am withdrawing my capital, Julian. Your company freezes today.”

His phone vibrated.

Then again.

Then again.

He glanced down, still angry.

His face changed before he finished reading the first alert.

“What?” he whispered.

Eleanor gripped his sleeve.

“Julian?”

His voice rose.

“The joint accounts… the corporate trust… it’s all completely locked?”

I leaned back against the pillow.

“Now you understand why I wasn’t worried about the silver spoons.”

Security guided him backward.

Julian resisted once.

Not enough to be brave.

Enough to look pathetic.

“This is illegal!” he shouted.

I met his eyes.

“No. This is documented.”

May you like

His phone kept vibrating as they dragged him into the corridor.

For the first time in our marriage, Julian was the one trapped outside the glass.
