Chapter 18 - LINDA’S EXPLANATION
Linda wore a navy dress and a simple silver cross.
She began with Samuel’s death.
Carter Earthworks had debt, employees, and unfinished projects. Deep Meadow’s payments kept families employed.
She called the early loads “stabilized industrial fill.”
“Did you know disposal permits were required?” her attorney asked.
“I relied on Samuel.”
“After his death?”
“I relied on Calvin Ross.”
“Did you order false samples?”
“I requested confirmation because the first tests seemed contaminated.”
“Did you use Samuel’s signature?”
“Old systems retained his credentials.”
Responsibility became passive grammar.
Records showed active instructions.
She described me as suspicious and controlling.
“Emily refused every reasonable agreement.”
“Did she own the farm?” the prosecutor asked.
“Yes.”
“Could she refuse?”
“Legally.”
The single word revealed everything.
“Did you believe marriage gave Trent another right?”
“Marriage creates shared obligations.”
“Did it create subsurface access?”
“No.”
“Did it create Emily’s signature?”
“No.”
“Did it allow you to bury her?”
Linda’s attorney objected.
The judge required the prosecutor to proceed factually.
“Did you direct Trent to place Emily in the pit?”
“I believed she needed time away from devices and outside influence.”
“Buried to her neck?”
“She could breathe.”
“Did she consent?”
“She was hysterical.”
“That was not my question.”
Linda looked at me.
“No.”
“Did you restrict food?”
“She refused what Mara brought.”
The audio captured me asking for food.
“Did you know she was pregnant?”
“Obviously.”
“Did you plan medical monitoring?”
“Trent checked her.”
Trent had no medical training.
“Did you set a release time?”
“When she signed.”
“Was there another way out?”
“She could have cooperated.”
The prosecutor asked about the baby.
“Did you say the plan was whatever left you the land?”
“I meant the company access.”
“Did miscarriage prevent the child lock?”
“I did not want miscarriage.”
“Did the possibility stop you?”
Linda’s composure broke.
“I knew Emily was stronger than she pretended.”
Survival had been assigned as my duty.
Her cruelty became confidence in my body.
Then the prosecutor displayed the environmental release.
It transferred cleanup liability to the trust.
“You wanted Emily to accept contamination created before she was an adult.”
“I wanted the land remediated.”
“With the trust paying?”
“The land carries the problem.”
“Who carried the money?”
Deep Meadow transfers appeared.
Carter accounts.
Linda’s retirement home.
Trent’s equipment.
Mara’s tuition.
The company survived.
The land absorbed the debt.
Linda had called that family responsibility.
The jury began deliberations after six weeks of testimony.
