Chapter 1 - BENEATH THE WATER

Vanessa’s hand struck Ethan’s cheek so hard that his glasses flew onto the wet patio.

Before I could reach him, she drove both palms into his chest.

My nine-year-old son fell backward over the pool’s stone edge.

The splash swallowed his scream.

“Stop screaming—you’re ruining my engagement!”

Ethan did not know how to swim.

He had spent two years working with an adaptive instructor simply to tolerate water touching his ears. Sudden immersion could send his body into panic before he remembered any safety skill.

I ran.

My father’s arm closed across my throat from behind.

Thomas dragged me backward against his chest and lifted me partly off my heels.

“Let me go!” I clawed at his sleeve. “My son can’t swim!”

Ethan surfaced once.

His hands slapped the water without rhythm. His mouth opened, but no sound came out before he sank again.

Vanessa stood at the edge in her fitted leather jacket and engagement dress, staring down at him as though he had spilled something valuable.

Guests began shouting.

No one reached the water.

My father tightened his arm.

“If he can’t survive,” he said into my ear, “he doesn’t deserve to live.”

The sentence emptied every useless thought from my mind.

I drove my heel onto the top of his foot.

His grip loosened.

I twisted, slammed my elbow into his ribs, and tore free.

My dress dragged behind me as I dove.

Cold water closed over my head. The skirt wrapped around my legs and pulled me sideways. Through the blur, I saw Ethan sinking toward the blue-tiled floor, his eyes open and his arms no longer moving.

I caught him beneath the shoulders.

My lungs burned as I kicked upward.

Two guests reached over the edge and pulled Ethan from my arms. I climbed out after him, tearing the side of my gown on the stone.

Ethan lay motionless.

I tilted his head, cleared his mouth, and gave two breaths.

No response.

I began compressions.

“One, two, three—”

Vanessa was crying behind me.

“My party. She destroyed my party.”

Thomas told someone to call his former precinct instead of 911.

I gave Ethan another breath.

“Come back to me, sweetheart. Mommy’s here.”

His body jerked.

Water spilled from his mouth as he coughed and gasped.

I rolled him onto his side and held him against my chest.

His fingers closed around my soaked dress.

“Mommy.”

“I’m here.”

Sirens rose beyond the property.

Vanessa backed away.

Thomas straightened his blazer and pointed toward the bruise forming on his foot.

“She assaulted me.”

I removed my phone from the waterproof pouch attached inside my evening bag. I had started recording when Vanessa began shouting at Ethan after the champagne bottle popped.

The camera was still running.

“Neither of you understands what I’m about to do.”

The first police officer entered with paramedics behind him. I handed over my phone without stopping the recording.

“Preserve everything from the last six minutes.”

The paramedics placed oxygen over Ethan’s face and transferred him to a stretcher. His chest rose too quickly. His eyes drifted.

I climbed into the ambulance beside him.

Before the doors closed, Ethan tugged weakly at my wrist.

“Mommy…”

“Yes?”

“Grandpa put medicine in my drink.”

The paramedic heard him.

So did the body camera of the officer standing at the doors.

And when investigators examined the half-empty lemonade glass beside Ethan’s abandoned chair, they found a white residue settled beneath the ice.
