Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO ANSWERED THE CLINIC’S CALLS

The vasectomy clinic preserved telephone records for administrative purposes.
My attorney obtained them through discovery after Diego formally filed for divorce and alleged adultery.
The clinic had called three times.
The first call occurred six days after the procedure.
A nurse spoke with Diego directly about swelling and pain.
She reminded him:
“You are not sterile yet. Continue contraception and schedule semen analysis in approximately twelve weeks.”
The second call occurred one month later.
Paola answered Diego’s phone.
She identified herself as his fiancée.
Not coworker.
Not emergency contact.
Fiancée.
The nurse refused to discuss medical details without authorization.
Paola said Diego was in a meeting and asked one question:
“Is pregnancy still possible after the procedure?”
The nurse answered only in general terms.
“Yes. Until semen analysis confirms success, pregnancy remains possible.”
The third call came from Diego’s phone to the clinic.
The recording system captured Paola’s voice.
She requested that the follow-up appointment be canceled.
“He has decided not to complete testing,” she said.
The receptionist warned that the physician could not confirm sterility without a sample.
Paola replied:
“He understands.”
Diego later claimed he had never authorized cancellation.
His calendar showed Paola removed the appointment from his work schedule.
That did not absolve him.
He had received written instructions.
He never asked where the test went.
He stopped using contraception because certainty suited him.
But Paola had actively created that certainty while knowing it was false.
Rachel reviewed the records in her office.
“Why would she want him to believe he was sterile?”
“To separate us?”
“Perhaps.”
I looked toward the dates.
The canceled test occurred four days before the night our baby was probably conceived.
Paola knew pregnancy remained possible.
Then, when I announced it, she allowed Diego to accuse me publicly.
“She wanted him to think I cheated.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Rachel opened another file.
“Because Diego and Paola signed a lease together nine days before your positive pregnancy test.”
I felt something collapse inside me.
“He said he moved in with her after I told him.”
“He already had a key.”
The apartment had been rented through a corporate relocation account.
Paola listed herself and Diego as occupants.
Their affair was not a reaction to my pregnancy.
My pregnancy became their opportunity to rewrite when the affair began.
They told friends Diego sought comfort after discovering my betrayal.
In truth, he had prepared another home before I knew I was pregnant.
The restaurant photograph was not the first image.
Company travel records showed hotel rooms shared across three conferences.
Expense receipts contained dinners for two charged after midnight.
Messages recovered from Diego’s work account revealed Paola’s strategy.
PAOLA: If Laura gets pregnant before you are cleared, you know what she’ll claim.
DIEGO: It won’t happen.
PAOLA: You didn’t use anything Sunday.
DIEGO: Why are you tracking that?
PAOLA: Because if she traps you with a baby, you’ll never leave.
DIEGO: The procedure worked.
PAOLA: Exactly.
She knew it had not been confirmed.
She used his arrogance to make the possibility disappear from his mind.
Another exchange occurred the day after I showed Diego the positive test.
DIEGO: She says the doctor warned us it wasn’t immediate.
PAOLA: Of course she says that now.
DIEGO: The timing is close.
PAOLA: Don’t let her confuse you with details.
DIEGO: I want proof.
PAOLA: Make her admit adultery in the settlement. Once she signs, she cannot use the child to keep the house.
There it was.
The house.
Paola did not only want Diego.
She wanted the property where we lived.
The house stood in a rapidly developing district outside San Antonio. My grandmother purchased the land decades earlier, and I used inherited money for the down payment.
Diego’s name appeared on the mortgage because we bought during the marriage.
But the equity was substantial, and a commercial developer had recently offered to purchase several neighboring properties.
Paola’s brother represented that developer.
If I surrendered the house quickly, Diego could sell it through their firm.
The proposed settlement valued the property at less than half the developer’s offer.
They expected shame to make me sign before obtaining an appraisal.
I looked at Rachel.
“Can they do that?”
“Not lawfully if we prove the true value and your separate contribution.”
“Did Diego know about the developer?”
“His emails suggest yes.”
My husband had not simply believed I cheated.
He had used the accusation to convert our marriage into leverage.
The paternity question mattered emotionally.
The property mattered financially.
Paola’s final message to her brother was sent before the ultrasound.
LAURA IS GOING ALONE. DIEGO WILL BRING THE PAPERS AFTER SHE HEARS THE DATE.
BROTHER: WHAT IF THE TIMELINE SUPPORTS HIM?
PAOLA: DIEGO WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND THE TIMELINE.
May you like
She had underestimated the doctor.
She had also underestimated how carefully courts examine dates when people attempt to turn assumptions into property.
