Chapter 20 - THE APPEAL
Denise appealed several convictions.
Her attorneys argued the guardianship documents represented preliminary family planning, not fraud, because the trust never approved payment.
The appellate court upheld the attempted-fraud conviction.
The steps had gone beyond thought.
Appraisal.
Document service.
Copied signature.
School authorization.
Residency plan.
Prepared petition.
Trust inquiry.
The plan failed because institutions stopped it, not because Denise abandoned it.
One obstruction count was narrowed because the same delayed call supported another offense. Her sentence decreased modestly.
The core convictions remained.
We explained none of those details to Lily at nine.
At twelve, she would receive a child-friendly legal summary.
Mom completed home confinement.
She attended parenting-boundary classes even though she would never parent Lily again.
Her probation officer reported compliance.
She sent annual apology letters through the therapist.
The first still defended the house.
The second admitted lying about my agreement.
The third said:
I told myself you would understand after the house was safe. I treated your permission as something we could collect later. That was wrong.
Lily chose not to read them.
At eleven, she asked for the most recent letter.
She read the first page.
“Does she say why she didn’t look for me?”
“Yes.”
“What reason?”
“She says pride made her believe you had to return first.”
Lily folded the letter.
“That’s a bad reason.”
“Yes.”
“Is she sorry?”
“I think she understands more than she did.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
I paused.
“She says she is sorry. Whether it is enough for you is a different question.”
Lily stored the letter in a box.
She did not request contact.
Denise wrote to Mason and Noah regularly under court supervision.
Mason refused the first year.
Noah read every letter.
Tom supported both choices.
Denise’s apologies improved slowly.
She stopped calling the prosecution a slowly.
She stopped family misunderstanding.
She admitted using the boys and blaming Mason for preserving evidence.
Repair remained possible for them.
It did not require Lily’s participation.
My hospital promoted Karen Doyle instead of me during the year of the case.
I felt resentment.
Then relief.
I later applied for a scheduling-management role with predictable hours.
I received it based on performance, not pity.
The salary was slightly lower than the promotion I once wanted.
The life was more stable.
