Chapter 9

The investigation into Haven Grace Clinic continued after our family trials ended.
Dr. Harrison admitted Emma was not the only infant transferred through falsified records.
He identified eleven cases over twenty-two years.
Some involved coercive adoptions.
Some involved mothers told their babies died.
Some involved wealthy families purchasing privacy around illegal placements.
Diane referred at least four women to the clinic.
Malcolm Crowe prepared paperwork.
Harrison altered medical files.
The network had existed before my daughters were born.
One file involved a teenage mother named Rebecca Sloan.
Her son was declared stillborn.
He later appeared in adoption records under another family.
Another involved a married woman whose husband arranged placement of a daughter without her consent because he wanted a son.
The case became larger than Carter money.
Investigators established a review unit with independent legal support for affected families and adoptees.
DNA testing was voluntary and handled carefully.
Truth could reveal identity.
It could also disrupt stable lives.
No one was delivered to a biological parent like recovered property.
Adults chose contact.
Children received representation.
Medical histories were corrected.
Some families reunited.
Others did not.
I joined no official investigative team because I was a victim and witness.
I did, however, use part of the trust recovery to fund independent counsel for affected children.
Marcus insisted the program have no Carter name.
It became the Open Birth Initiative.
“Your grandmother would have liked that,” Miriam said.
“I’m not building it for her approval.”
That sentence marked progress.
For most of my life, every choice had been measured against women who were dead, controlling, or disappointed.
Evelyn’s hidden records became important.
Inside her estate archive were letters explaining why she created the age-four DNA clause.
Years earlier, she noticed Diane had an infant photograph that did not match any known family child.
She suspected Diane and Crowe had participated in an illegal placement.
Evelyn confronted her.
Diane threatened to declare her mentally incompetent.
Evelyn quietly restructured the trust.
Why not call police?
The answer was written in her own hand.
I wanted proof strong enough to survive my daughter’s lawyers.
The same delay repeated across generations.
Adults waited for perfect evidence while children grew inside lies.
Evelyn’s suspicion concerned a child named Rachel.
Me.
Miriam read the letter twice before showing it to me.
Evelyn wrote:
Diane returned from Haven Grace in October 2001 carrying an infant she said she delivered privately after a hidden pregnancy. I had seen her weekly. She had not been pregnant.
My birth certificate said Diane gave birth to me at St. Catherine Medical Center.
There were photographs of her in a hospital bed.
A bracelet.
A discharge record.
All could have been staged.
“Why did Evelyn never tell me?”
“She died before confirming it.”
“She had six years.”
“She may have feared Diane would take you away.”
“I was already taken from someone.”
“We don’t know that yet.”
The phrase irritated me because it was correct.
My DNA did not match Diane.
It did not match Robert.
I had never questioned whether they were my biological parents.
Vanessa was their biological daughter.
I was not.
The family had not only stolen Emma.
They had stolen me.
Diane’s attorney refused a new interview unless prosecutors offered concessions.
They did not.
Robert claimed he always believed I was adopted legally.
No adoption record existed.
Vanessa said Diane told her I came from “a girl who could not keep herself clean.”
That language had followed me through childhood.
Diane called me ungrateful whenever I challenged her.
She said she saved me from where I came from.
I thought she meant poverty metaphorically.
She meant a person.
The Open Birth Initiative’s oldest sealed file carried my date of birth.
Biological mother:
Elena Marlowe.
