Chapter 10 - THE ENVELOPE THAT ENDED THE WEDDING
The safe behind Elaine’s painting contained one brass key, a stack of letters, and a deposit receipt from Savannah Atlantic Bank.
The key belonged to a private records vault rented by Rose.
Investigators obtained authority to open it with the estate representative present.
Inside were original trust records, Hargrove financing documents, and a sealed evidence bag containing material recovered from Rose’s car before the insurance company destroyed it.
A small strip of black paint marked one piece of damaged metal.
Rose must have removed it after an earlier encounter, not after the fatal crash.
A note explained:
Black sedan struck rear bumper in parking garage three days before causeway. Arthur said not to report. Conrad’s security supervisor offered cash repair.
The security supervisor was Grant Mercer.
Former police officer.
Director of protective operations for Hargrove Meridian.
He had been driving one of Conrad’s dark sedans during the week Rose died.
Mercer denied following her.
He said the parking-garage contact was accidental and properly settled.
No formal record existed.
The paint sample was compared with the sedan Hargrove’s company later sold for parts.
A retained repair sample matched in general composition.
It could not prove the same vehicle forced Rose off the road.
Celeste’s wedding cooperation plan continued.
Investigators refused to use the ceremony as a theatrical mass-arrest opportunity.
They wanted evidence from Arthur’s scheduled meeting with Conrad and Grant Mercer.
Celeste agreed to wear a recording device during pre-ceremony conversations.
She also made one personal decision.
She canceled the marriage.
Not privately.
Not yet.
Arthur arrived at St. Alden Cathedral in a black car.
Reporters waited outside.
Conrad entered through a side door with his wife.
Marlene wore silver and behaved like the mother of the groom at a royal event.
The girls did not attend.
I remained at Miriam’s office with them.
The envelope had already done its work.
Celeste entered the bridal room wearing a white dress.
Her attorney, investigators, and a cathedral administrator waited inside an adjoining room.
Arthur knocked.
“Are you ready?”
Celeste opened the door.
She was not wearing a veil.
“Before we go downstairs, I want to ask about Rose.”
His smile disappeared.
“Today?”
“She wrote to me.”
Arthur looked toward the hallway.
“What did Charles give you?”
“A letter showing the post-marriage incapacity documents.”
“They were planning drafts.”
“You intended to control my trust.”
“I intended to protect us.”
“You used the same language with Rose.”
“She was unstable.”
Celeste held up the transcript.
“You said if I became difficult, you already knew how to make a wife look unstable.”
Arthur’s face tightened.
“That recording was taken out of context.”
“What context makes it acceptable?”
He stepped into the room.
“Your father is downstairs. Hundreds of people are waiting.”
“I know.”
“You cannot humiliate our families.”
“Rose’s daughters stood beside their mother’s grave while you announced they were a problem.”
“That was grief.”
“You had already moved my boxes into her bedroom.”
Arthur reached for her arm.
Celeste stepped back.
“Do not touch me.”
He lowered his hand.
“You need me.”
“No. You need my voting shares before Monday.”
His voice became cold.
“Do you understand what happens to your father’s company if you walk away?”
“That is his question to answer.”
“You think Charles will protect you?”
“This is not about Charles.”
“It is always about the Bennetts believing they are morally superior.”
Celeste looked directly at him.
“I helped you lie to Rose. I followed her car. I failed to stop after the crash. I will answer for that.”
Arthur’s face changed completely.
“You spoke to police.”
“Yes.”
“You stupid—”
He stopped before completing the insult.
Celeste removed her engagement ring.
“The wedding is canceled.”
Outside, cathedral bells began signaling the ceremony’s scheduled start.
Arthur stared at the ring in her palm.
“You cannot do this.”
“I already did.”
He turned toward the door.
Investigators did not arrest him there because existing release conditions and strategy did not require it.
Security escorted him from the private corridor after he began shouting.
Guests waited inside the cathedral for twenty-seven minutes before an announcement stated the ceremony would not occur.
Marlene confronted Celeste near the entrance.
“You ruined my son.”
Celeste answered:
“Rose warned me he would say that.”
Conrad remained silent.
His eyes moved toward the investigators entering the side hall.
Grant Mercer was no longer at the cathedral.
He had left ten minutes before Celeste canceled the wedding.
His phone was turned off.
His sedan was found near the airport.
Inside the trunk, police discovered a damaged blue heron emblem removed from the white van Celeste drove the night Rose died.
They also found copies of Rose’s psychiatric report and photographs of Lucy outside school.
Grant Mercer had been watching the girls.
The envelope destroyed Arthur’s wedding before he reached the altar.
