Chapter 25 - THE SPEECH

Emma wrote the speech herself.

I was not allowed to edit.

“Can I proofread?”

NO.

“Grammar?”

NO.

“Punctuation?”

MOM.

Fine.

Mr. Reeves could help only if she requested.

She did not.

The school asked whether she wanted pre-recorded audio.

No.

Live AAC.

Why?

IF IT BREAKS THEY WAIT.

That sentence almost broke me.

She wanted the room to experience what should have happened all along.

Wait.

Graduation rehearsal.

Device connected to sound system.

Test.

First sentence came through too loud.

Emma winced.

Audio technician apologized.

Adjusted.

Second test good.

Then a software update notification appeared.

Emma’s face went pale.

Old fear.

IT specialist said:

“We can postpone update.”

She tapped:

YES.

No forced restart.

Simple competence.

Then Sloane approached from twenty feet away after rehearsal.

Stopped.

Looked at staff.

Emma saw her.

Sloane pointed to herself, then toward Emma, questioning permission.

Emma thought.

Tapped:

NO.

Sloane nodded.

Walked away.

No dramatic reconciliation before graduation.

Good.

Then Connor? Not present.

Good.

The evening before ceremony, I found Emma by fountain.

School grounds open for senior family event.

She sat on bridge.

Tablet beside her.

“Want company?”

She tapped:

YES.

I sat.

Water moved below.

New tablet reflected lights.

She typed:

YOU PUSHED HIM THERE.

“I remember.”

FUNNY NOW.

“Sometimes.”

BAD TOO.

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

DID I CHANGE SCHOOL?

“You helped force it to change.”

DID YOU?

“Did I what?”

CHANGE.

I thought.

“Yes.”

HOW.

“I stopped thinking being right made every reaction right.”

She nodded.

Then typed:

I LEARNED NOT EVERY SILENCE SAME.

“What do you mean?”

She looked toward school.

MR REEVES SILENT BECAUSE COWARD.

KIDS SILENT BECAUSE SCARED.

ME SILENT BECAUSE BODY.

DIFFERENT.

That was better than anything I had learned in law school.

Then:

PEOPLE THINK NO VOICE = NO WORDS.

I knew.

She tapped her device.

TOO MANY WORDS.

I laughed.

“Definitely.”

Then I asked:

“Are you scared tomorrow?”

YES.

“Want to skip speech?”

NO.

Good.

We sat by fountain until lights came on.

No plaque.

No memorial.

Just water.

May you like

The place where someone tried to destroy her voice had become ordinary stone again.

That was enough.
