Chapter 6

The full garden recording came from an unexpected source.

The estate’s outdoor security cameras stored footage through a company controlled by the children’s property trust.

Robert had access to live views but not deletion authority.

I had forgotten.

Leah had not.

The footage began at 9:42 that morning.

Staff arranged tables while Helen spoke with Allison near the cake stand.

Helen said:

“Thomas needs to see them working before he arrives.”

Allison asked:

“What if he comes early?”

“Robert will keep him at the bank.”

The bank’s repeated request that delayed me had come from incorrect data Robert submitted intentionally.

They controlled my arrival time.

At 10:53, Robert gathered Allison’s sons and two teenage cousins.

“Phones ready when Thomas enters.”

One cousin asked:

“What are we filming?”

“A family lesson.”

“Will he get mad?”

Robert smiled.

“That is the lesson.”

At 11:07, Helen placed aprons on my children.

Rebecca said she did not want to serve.

Helen answered:

“Your mother served people before Thomas rescued her.”

Megan had never needed rescuing.

She had worked at her parents’ diner and earned every step afterward.

At 11:35, Jacob touched the sugar flower.

Helen led him into the pantry.

The interior pantry camera captured her closing the door.

No lock appeared, but she held the handle from outside when Jacob tried to open it.

“You come out when you can control yourself.”

His crying lasted eleven minutes.

At 12:18, Samuel dropped a glass.

Robert took his plate away.

“Staff eat after guests.”

At 1:02, Rebecca asked for water.

Allison handed her an empty pitcher.

“Fill everyone else first.”

The most damaging conversation occurred at 2:41.

Robert stood with Helen beside the fountain.

Robert:

“What if Thomas refuses to swing?”

Helen:

“He will when you mention Megan.”

Robert:

“Kline needs more than shouting.”

Helen:

“Call the children filthy. He hates that word.”

Robert:

“That’s excessive.”

Helen:

“So is losing thirty-eight million.”

Allison entered the frame.

“David says one clean assault clip plus the prior board videos should support emergency suspension.”

Robert:

“And the children?”

Helen:

“They live here temporarily. We vote their shares, close Halcyon, then return them after Thomas completes treatment.”

Allison:

“What if he fights?”

Helen:

“The longer he fights, the more unstable he looks.”

The cameras proved my father’s insult was scripted.

They did not erase my decision to punch him.

Officer Park called after reviewing the footage.

“The provocation will matter as context.”

“Does it make the assault legal?”

“No.”

“I understand.”

“The prosecutor may consider diversion given your record, cooperation, and circumstances. No promises.”

“I will accept responsibility.”

That statement became public later.

Some people called me weak for admitting wrongdoing after my father abused my children.

Others called the punch heroic.

Both reactions made me uneasy.

A parent can be justified in ending a threat without every act becoming lawful or wise.

My children had needed me to remove them.

Instead, I gave my father the image he wanted.

The fact that his plan failed did not make the swing good parenting.
