Chapter 22 - KENDALL COMES HOME

Kendall completed her custodial sentence and entered supervised release when Hayden was fourteen.

She moved into a small apartment near her children.

No family property.

No club account.

No Cole.

He remained incarcerated longer.

Kendall worked for an event-rental company and attended financial counseling.

She requested contact with Hayden.

He said no.

Then changed his answer.

“One meeting.”

The session occurred in Dr. Grant’s office.

I sat outside.

Hayden later told me what he wanted.

Kendall apologized for the dinner.

Not generally.

Specifically.

“I arranged the side table. I ordered no meals. I fed my dog steak. I wanted you and your mother to feel beneath us.”

Hayden asked:

“Why me?”

“Because hurting you hurt your mom.”

“Didn’t you like me?”

“I did.”

“Then liking people doesn’t stop you?”

“Not if you choose jealousy over responsibility.”

He asked about the guardianship form.

Kendall admitted she planned to become his backup guardian and Meridian’s chair.

“Could you run Mom’s company?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“I thought owning it meant I could hire people.”

Hayden laughed once.

Not kindly.

“That’s stupid.”

“Yes.”

He declined a hug.

They met again six months later with his cousins.

Kendall followed every boundary.

No gifts over fifty dollars.

No discussion of my parents.

No asking Hayden to reassure her.

Their relationship remained limited.

That was still more than she had a right to demand.

Samara and Finnley remained incarcerated.

Lawrence completed release earlier but moved out of state after his marriage ended.

He requested no contact with Hayden.

Perhaps he understood the distance better than others.

At fifteen, Hayden began working weekends at an animal shelter.

He refused trust money for a car and saved part of his wages.

I offered to match his savings.

He asked for the terms in writing.

I smiled.

Then wrote them.

No interest.

No control over vehicle choice beyond safety.

No repayment if he completed defensive-driving training.

He read every line.

“Can you add that you can’t track the car unless there’s an emergency?”

The request hurt.

It also proved he understood consent.

We added it.

He bought a used blue sedan.

May you like

Not luxurious.

Entirely visible.
