Chapter 12
At sentencing, Vanessa addressed Emma through a statement reviewed by the court.
“I threw the skillet.
“I told myself I meant to scare you, not hurt you. Adults use that sentence when they want the intention to matter more than the child who was injured.
“You were four.
“You sat in a chair.
“You ate eggs your cousin said you could eat.
“Nothing you did caused my choice.”
Emma was too young to attend.
Her therapist and I stored the statement for later.
Marjorie’s statement was different.
She spoke about sacrifice.
“I raised two daughters and built a family business.”
The judge asked:
“Did that entitle you to take funds from your granddaughter’s trust?”
“No.”
“Did it entitle you to create a confrontation for court evidence?”
“I believed Rachel needed help.”
“Why did help depend on the Harvest Union closing?”
Marjorie looked toward the table.
“The company supported everyone.”
“The proposed transaction paid you a multimillion-dollar consulting package.”
“I earned it.”
“By what independent valuation?”
She had no answer.
I gave my victim statement.
“My daughter’s scar is visible.
“The harder injuries are not.
“She asks before sitting in any chair.
“She will not eat from a plate unless her name is beside it.
“She hides when butter burns.
“She believes adults become dangerous when a table is arranged incorrectly.
“My family did not merely fail to protect her.
“They created a world where her confusion became useful.
“They wanted my anger.
“They wanted my signature.
“They wanted her money.
“When Vanessa threw the skillet, everyone in that kitchen had a chance to become a safe adult.
“No one called for help.
“My mother stopped Lily.
“My father picked up a cup.
“Guests watched.
“They waited for me because my reaction mattered more to their plan than Emma’s breathing.
“That is what I ask the court to consider.”
The judge imposed substantial prison sentences, restitution, and permanent restrictions on Marjorie and David serving as guardians, trustees, or corporate fiduciaries.
The trust recovered money through insurance, restitution, and asset sales.
Not all at once.
