Chapter 17 - THE DAMAGED FILE

Forensic analysts recovered fragments.

Wind.

Porch boards.

My breathing through the straw.

Caleb:

If the baby—

Static.

Judith:

—alternate provision—

Mara:

Don’t.

Caleb:

I’m asking what happens.

The rest vanished beneath digital damage caused when the phone overheated.

The fragment could not prove an intent to cause fetal death.

It proved the possibility had been discussed.

The prosecutor refused to charge the most extreme theory without more evidence.

Some commentators accused the office of weakness.

I supported precision.

I wanted Caleb punished for what he did, not turned into a larger monster through guesses that might fail in court.

Mara explained the conversation.

Caleb asked whether the audit still activated if June did not survive birth.

Judith said the voting rights would remain with the interim committee for another year.

Caleb said:

“Then there are two ways through this.”

Mara told him to stop.

She did not tell police until months later because admitting the sentence made her fear the burial had contained darker intent.

Her delay weakened credibility.

The fragment corroborated enough to enter the investigation, though not necessarily trial.

Dr. Hart recommended I not listen again.

Stress triggered contractions.

I focused on delivery.

Helen helped create a medical plan with no family access beyond people I named.

Nora Quinn, my college roommate, flew in to stay with me. She had no connection to Caleb or Morgan Environmental.

I chose her as support person.

Not Arthur.

Not a board member.

Not a lawyer.

The hospital used an alias in public systems.

Caleb received notice through counsel only after I was admitted.

June was born at thirty-six weeks after a long induction.

She weighed five pounds, one ounce.

Her first cry was thin and furious.

I cried harder.

She required breathing support for six hours, then stabilized in the neonatal unit.

The DNA test later confirmed Caleb’s paternity.

No surprise twist.

He was her biological father.

He was also the man whose choices endangered her before birth.

At thirty days, the descendant trust activated fully.

Daniel Price became independent managing trustee.

I became protector under court oversight because financial and abuse litigation remained active.

My authority included replacing conflicted committee members, demanding audits, and approving major transactions with independent concurrence.

It did not allow me to withdraw June’s money for personal use.

I requested stricter limits.

No spouse automatic nomination.

No single protector after my term.

Employee and farm-community representation.

Judicial review for incapacity changes.

The reforms began before I left the hospital.

June’s birth did not turn me into a queen.

It turned a hidden system into work.

Caleb sent one letter.

I did not read it.

Helen did.

It said:

You won. Let me meet my daughter.

No acknowledgment of the dirt.

May you like

No apology.

He still described June as the prize at the end of a contest.
