Chapter 12 - THE CHILD THEY INTENDED TO MOVE
The adoption agency had never completed a placement.
Its director believed Maris was Annie’s lawful guardian and that both parents had abandoned the child.
Malcolm supplied certified copies of the forged divorce and guardianship orders.
The proposed couple lived in Europe and had donated heavily to the Williams Foundation.
The arrangement would have moved Annie beyond easy reach while preserving private access for Maris through family friends.
The agency director cooperated after seeing the fraud.
No evidence showed the prospective parents knew the documents were false.
The $300,000 was recovered before transfer.
The discovery added attempted custodial interference and wire-fraud evidence but did not delay the verdict.
Maris was convicted of conspiracy, trust fraud, identity theft, forgery, financial exploitation of a minor, custodial interference, obstruction, and witness intimidation.
She was acquitted of one count alleging she personally created a specific false school invoice because Gordon’s authorship could not be excluded.
Malcolm was convicted of conspiracy, forgery, legal-document fraud, obstruction, and attempted custodial interference.
Gordon was convicted through his plea.
Chase and Natalie received convictions based on negotiated pleas.
The mixed verdict mattered.
It showed jurors separated proven actions rather than condemning everyone associated with the family.
At sentencing, Catherine spoke first.
“You did not only steal money. You stole ordinary years. Annie learned to hide bread. She learned that adults with documents could make her father vanish.”
I addressed my mother afterward.
“You used my pride as a lock. I provided the door by refusing to question you. Annie and Catherine paid the price.”
Maris received an aggregate eighteen-year sentence, followed by supervision and permanent no-contact orders involving Annie and Catherine.
At seventy-one, she might spend the rest of her life in custody.
The judge did not describe age as either immunity or additional punishment.
Malcolm received fourteen years, permanent disbarment, restitution, and prohibition from fiduciary work.
Gordon received nine years after cooperation.
Chase received four years.
Natalie received eighteen months in a residential correctional program, followed by probation and restitution.
Brian pleaded guilty to a lesser obstruction offense for concealing and reporting Catherine’s locations. The court considered coercion, evidence preservation, and eventual cooperation. He received probation, community service, and loss of part of his employment pension through civil settlement.
He did not complain.
The Williams Family Foundation entered permanent independent governance. Recovered properties, insurance, and restitution restored most of the stolen funds.
Programs that had been used as decoration were audited and rebuilt.
Annie’s trust recovered approximately $5.8 million through asset sales and professional-liability settlements. My repayment restored additional value.
Not every dollar returned.
The trust remained sufficient for her education, health, housing, and future.
Appeals followed.
Maris’s central convictions were affirmed. One overlapping forgery count was reversed because the same document supported two insufficiently distinct charges. Her sentence decreased by six months.
Malcolm’s restitution was corrected to avoid duplicate recovery from his insurer.
Precision did not weaken the truth.
The family court entered permanent orders.
Catherine received sole physical custody during reunification.
I received expanding parenting time based on Annie’s therapeutic readiness.
Maris had no contact rights.
No grandparent doctrine overcame the findings of harm.
Catherine and I remained legally married while deciding whether our relationship could survive.
Then Annie completed her first independent interview with the court-appointed child specialist.
The report contained one statement neither Catherine nor I had heard before.
For three years, Maris had called Annie every birthday.
