CHAP 5 — Vivian Cross Loses Control

Vivian Cross arrived at Mercy General in a cream suit two hours later.

Of course she did.

Women like Vivian do not wait to be accused. They enter early and try to arrange the lighting.

Adrien had called her from his office.

I heard only his side.

“Come to the hospital.”

A pause.

“No, Mother. Not later. Now.”

Another pause.

“You will not speak to Lena before I arrive.”

When Vivian stepped into the private consultation room, she looked exactly as I remembered.

Older, yes.

Silver hair more deliberate.

Lines near her mouth.

But the same cold elegance. The same ability to make a room feel like it had been inspected and found lacking.

Her eyes landed on me.

For one second, recognition flashed.

Then Norah.

Then Adrien.

Then the pieces connected.

Vivian did not gasp.

She smiled faintly.

“Oh, Adrien.”

He stood across from her with a folder in his hand.

“Did you know Elena was pregnant?”

Her gaze moved to me.

“She goes by Lena now, apparently.”

“Answer the question.”

Vivian sighed.

“Do not take that tone with me in your own hospital.”

Adrien placed the folder on the table.

“This is not my hospital. This is my daughter’s treatment room.”

Vivian’s face tightened.

“Daughter is a serious word.”

“So is fraud.”

Her eyes narrowed.

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents I had kept for seven years because fear is careful.

The torn nondisclosure paper.

The envelope with Vivian’s old address embossing.

The check she gave me.

The threatening voicemail I had saved on an outdated phone and transferred through every move.

Adrien pressed play.

Vivian’s younger voice filled the room.

If you come back carrying a pregnancy story, I will make sure every court believes you are unstable, greedy, and unfit.

Adrien did not look at her while it played.

That restraint frightened her more than shouting would have.

Vivian lifted her chin.

“I protected you.”

Adrien laughed once.

It held no humor.

“You let me believe the woman I loved abandoned me.”

“She did abandon you.”

“You made sure she thought staying would endanger our child.”

“She was unsuitable.”

Norah shifted in her wheelchair near the door, where Dr. Reeves stood beside her protectively.

Vivian’s eyes flicked toward the child.

“She should not be in here.”

Adrien’s voice dropped.

“Her name is Norah.”

Vivian said nothing.

“Say it,” Adrien ordered.

Her nostrils flared.

“Norah.”

He stepped closer.

“She is seven years old. She needs heart surgery. She had a twin brother who died after Lena ran from your threats in a storm. His name was Daniel.”

For the first time, Vivian’s face changed.

Not grief.

Fear of consequence.

“You cannot blame me for an accident.”

“No,” I said, standing.

My voice trembled, but I did not sit back down.

“I blame you for making a pregnant woman feel hunted enough to run.”

Vivian looked at me like I had forgotten my place.

“You always had a talent for drama.”

Adrien’s hand struck the table.

Norah flinched.

He immediately softened, then looked back at his mother.

“Leave.”

Vivian stared.

“What?”

“You are removed from all Cross Family Medical Foundation access pending legal review. Your board privileges are suspended. Your office will be sealed. Every communication from the year Elena disappeared will be audited.”

Color drained from her face.

“You would humiliate your mother?”

“You buried my children behind your pride.”

Her mouth opened.

No answer came.

Adrien picked up the phone.

“Security, escort Mrs. Cross from pediatric cardiac.”

Vivian looked at Norah one last time.

Norah stared back with Adrien’s eyes.

May you like

That was the moment Vivian finally understood.

The family she tried to control had survived without her permission.
